The Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel Rare Lyrics Archive

So, a little info: IÕve been collecting Simon & Garfunkel records and memorabilia for some time now, and IÕve noticed that the web catalogues for the lyrics to songs one or the other or both of them performed as Simon & Garfunkel, Paul Simon, or Art Garfunkel, are plentiful. Yet, there seems to be few pages with lyrics for many of the rarer songs that usually never made it past the 45 or the radio show or acetate or other format on which they were originally released or recorded—which often took place when one or the other used pseudonyms like Artie Garr, True Taylor, Tico and the Triumphs, Jerry Landis, Tom Graph, Paul Kane, etc. So, IÕve taken the liberty to piece together lyrics to many of the songs Simon or Garfunkel recorded that are harder to locate.

You know, I really wish I had a Big Bright Green Pleasure Machine right about now.

Surrender, Please Surrender

            ABC-Paramount 10363 (1962)           (Tom & Jerry)

Oh come on, give your love to me.

Surrender, please surrender,

Oh come on, give your love to me.

Always and foreverÉ

So true, the way your love should be.

IÕve been waitinÕ all my life,

Oh so patiently,

To find a girlie just like you.

Now that IÕve found you, love,

IÕll play the game

And try to make you love me too.

Surrender, please surrender,

Oh come on, give your love to me.

Always and foreverÉ

So true, the way your love should be.

WeÕll have such fun all dayÉ

WeÕll laugh and stay out late,

DrinkinÕ at a soda shop,

DancinÕ at a record hop.

IÕm begging down on my knees

Oh come on, give your love to me.

Surrender, please surrender,

Oh come on, give your love to me. (repeat and fade out)

I DonÕt Believe Them

Madison 169/Amy 835 (1961)           (Tico and the Triumphs)

Yesterday you swore to me

YouÕd be mine eternally

Today my friends all say itÕs true

YouÕre going out with someone new

But I donÕt believe them

No, no, no,

No, no, no,

I—I donÕt believe them.

Woh-oh-oh-oh-oh-ohÉ

Kids in school come up to me

Say what a fool I must be

They say that when I turn around

You head right for the lights of town

But I donÕt believe them

No, no, no,

I—I donÕt believe them.

Woh-oh-oh-oh-oh-ohÉ

IÔve been hurt so many times

That IÕm afraid to start

And if I believe everything that they say

It would break my heart

So IÕll go on trusting you

IÕve got no choice. What can I do?

I know that I just would die

If I found out you told a lie,

So I wonÕt believe them

No, no, no, no,

No! no, no,

I donÕt believe them

No, no, no, no,

No! no, no,

I donÕt believe themÉ (fade out)

She said, ÒIÕm sorry that I passed you by.

IÕm gonna skip my homework, gonna cut my class,

Bug outta here real fast.Ó

Hey, schoolgirl in the second row,

When I asked her for her hand,

Jack stepped in with the wedding band.

When I came home, she wasnÕt there.

And now IÕm playing solitaire.

No more king; no more queen.

Cards of love.

Carlos Dominguez

            Tribute 128 (1963)      (Paul Kane)

Refrain:

Carlos Dominguez: an unhappy man,

Always running away.

What are you searching for, Carlos Dominguez?

Why do you cry every day?

ÒI am searching for something that I cannot find.

I look for  a way I might find peace of mind.

I run Ôcause IÕm lost. IÕm afraid so I cry.

You ask why I search. There are many reasons why.Ó

[Refrain]

ÒI search for a truth; all I found was a lie.

I look for eternity, but I find all men die.

I am looking for answers, but I find only fate.

I am searching for love; all I find in this world is hate.Ó

Play Me A Sad Song

         Warwick 619 (1962)   (Jerry Landis)

Saturday night, IÕm all alone,

DonÕt have a date; IÕm just sittinÕ home.

The radioÕs playing the top tunes tonight.

Play me a sad song, please, mister deejay,

Play me a sad song tonight.

DonÕt want to hear a lullaby.

I canÕt sleep; I just sit and cry.

Play me a sad song, a song of love,

ÔCause thatÕs all that IÕm thinking of.

(repeat second verse)

SittinÕ here crying wonÕt get me a girl.

IÕll bet IÕm the loneliest boy in the world.

Oh whatÕs the use? Guess IÕll turn off the light.

Play me a sad song, please, mister deejay,

Play me a sad song tonight.

Warwick 619 (1962)   (Jerry Landis)

To hold each other tight

And kiss so that the lightÉ

It means a lot to themÉ

To see each other crying.

ItÕs love and thereÕs no denyingÉ

It means a lot to themÉ

Now canÕt you see

That all, all of these dreams someday

Will be reality?

It means a lot to themÉ

To go out on a date

And then to come awayÉ

Beat Love

            Octavia 8002? (1961?)            (Artie Garr)

LoveÉ

A teenage heart is all confused

And many thought are often fusedÉ

School and clothes and love.

YouÕre gonna hear what I tell you

Pay attention because

IÕve got a teenage heart the same as yours.

Maybe I love you and maybe I donÕtÉ

If I donÕt love you then you know I wonÕt.

Ba-da-da da-da da-da da-da da-da da-da da-da da-da-da

Ba-da da daÉ

We are the age of the Beatniks and weÕre pround of our fate.

Not much weÕre sure of Ôcept we know that weÕre great

We go for rock-Ôn-roll music,

Love to gab on the phone,

Love to be trusted and be left out alone.

Ba-da-da da-da da-da da-da da-da da-da da-da da-da-da

Ba-da da daÉ

Maybe IÕll side for you

And that day through.

If youÕd believe me thatÕs a lot IÕd do.

Maybe youÕll listen to the words that I say

But donÕt you worry; they donÕt mean a thing.

Love is what our hearts are singing ofÉ

All our voices now we meet everybodyÕs beat.

Love is what our hearts are singing ofÉ

All our voices now we meet everybodyÕs beat.

LaÉ la-la la la la-la laÉ la-la la la la-la laÉ la-la la la la...

Flame

Paul Simon Plus (original recording 1963?)    (Jerry Landis, probably)

FlameÉ that was her name.

Being with Flame set me on fire.

Her lips, sweeter than wine, clinging to mine,

Taught me desire.

She promised sheÕd always be right her in my arms.

But I didnÕt know that this love of ours was sending out fire alarms.

How I love youÉ

FlameÉ left as she came.

All of my tears canÕt put out the Flame.

She promised sheÕd always be right her in my arms.

But I didnÕt know that this love of ours was sending out fire alarms.

How I love youÉ

FlameÉ left as she came.

All of my tears canÕt put out the Flame.

The Lone Teen Ranger

Amy 875 (1962)         (Jerry Landis; recorded with all of Tico and the Triumphs)

Ba ba baÉ ba-ba ba-ba ba-baÉ

Hi, ho, Silver, away!

Ba ba baÉ ba-ba ba-ba ba-baÉ

Hey, but the Lone Teen Ranger!

Oh, he rides around on a big white horse,

HeÕs as cool as he can be.

And my baby fell in love with him

When she saw him on TV.

And since that day, IÕm sorry to say,

She hasnÕt had time for me

ÔCause he goes Òbang, bangÓ –gun shot–

HeÕs the Lone Teen Ranger.

Ba ba baÉ ba-ba ba-ba ba-baÉ

Hi, ho, Silver, away!

Ba ba baÉ ba-ba ba-ba ba-baÉ

Hey, but the Lone Teen Ranger!

To save my soul I canÕt get a date

And you know whoÕs to blame.

Since the Lone Teen Ranger came around,

My girfriendÕs not the same.

She even kissed the TV set,

Oh itÕs a crying shame.

ÔCause he goes Òbang, bangÓ –gun shot–

HeÕs the Lone Teen Ranger.

Ha! Pony!

Ride! Ride!

Every night at eight oÕclock, she turns on the TV.

The Lone Teen Ranger stole my girl.

(SheÕs got no time for me).

Well, he better watch out, Ôcause IÕm gettingÕ mad,

And hereÕs what IÕm gonna do:

IÕm gonna wear a mask and ride a horse and carry a six-gun too,

And when my baby looks at me, sheÕs gonna love me too.

ÔCause IÕll go Òbang, bangÓ –gun shot–

HeÕs the Lone Teen Ranger.

Hi, ho, Silver, there he goes! HeÕs the Lone Teen Ranger! [repeat and fade]

(Who was that masked man?

You donÕt know? ThatÕs the Lone Teen Ranger!)

Cry, Little Boy, Cry

Amy 860 (1962)         (Tico and the Triumphs)

Listen to my story—itÕs got a happy ending.

ItÕs dedicated to you dearÉ hereÕs the song IÕm sending.

Tra la-la la-la la la la-la-la la-la

La-la la-la la-la la la la-la-la la-la

La-la la-la la-la la la la-la-la la-la

La-la la-la la-la la la la-la-la la-la

Every night I sat up in my room

Feeling the silent gloom

Of my lonely heart

And the voice cried out

From deep inside of me

Why donÕt you cry, lil boy, cry?

So I cried, cried, cried,

Woh, I cried, cried, cried

Woh, I cried, cried, cried

Little boy cryÉ

All alone in this world

Without the love of a girl

Sometimes I felt that I could not go on

And everywhere I went

That voice inside of me

Kept saying ÒCry, lil boy cryÓ

So I cried, cried, cried,

Woh, I cried, cried, cried

Woh, I cried, cried, cried

Little boy cryÉ

Then darling I met you

And you were lonesome too

You seemed to understand

just how I felt

And as I kissed you then

I knew I loved you when

You said, ÒDonÕt cry, little boy, donÕt cry.Ó

So I wonÕt cry, cry, cry

No, I wonÕt cry, cry, cry

I wonÕt cry, cry, cry,

I wonÕt cryÉ

-- Oop dee waddy-waddy,

-- Oop dee waddy-waddy,

-- Oop dee waddy-waddy,

-- Cha-cha-cha!

Two teen-agers (ThatÕs us!)

Beneath the moon of love.

Two teen-agers (ThatÕs us!)

So in love.

Two teen-agers (ThatÕs us!)

Holding each other tight.

Two teen-agers (ThatÕs us!)

Why must we say goodnight?

The birds and the bees in the trees

Sing the sweetest melodies.

To young hearts a-flutter with a flaming desire,

A boy and girl in love and while the moon shines up above

And we say:

Two teen-agers (ThatÕs us!)

Sharing each otherÕs heart.

Two teen-agers (ThatÕs us!)

Vowing that we will never part.

Reverse lead and backing vocals:

Two teen-agers—thatÕs us.

Beneath the moon of love.

Two teen-agers—thatÕs us.

So in love.

Two teen-agers—thatÕs us.

Holding each other tight.

Two teen-agers—thatÕs us.

Why must we say goodnight?

Revert to original vocal arrangements:

The birds and the bees in the trees

Sing the sweetest melodies.

To young hearts a-flutter with a flaming desire,

Woo-bop-a-loo-chee-bop,

Cha-cha-cha.

Two teen-agers—thatÕs us.

Sharing each otherÕs heart.

Two teen-agers—thatÕs us.

Vowing that we will never part.

True or False

Big 614 (1958)                   (True Taylor)

You like to call me on the telephone, baby.

Please answer ÒtrueÓ or Òfalse.Ó

You like to tell me thatÕs when weÕre alone, baby.

Please answer ÒtrueÓ or Òfalse.Ó

And when weÕre at a party

And I spot no-one else

And a friend would take you home tonight,

My heart just melts.

Would it be so sad if I just go away, baby?

Please answer ÒtrueÓ or Òfalse.Ó

You canÕt wait until we mend the day, baby.

Please answer ÒtrueÓ or Òfalse.Ó

Well, IÕm a-checking on your answers

So I can plan to see

If my babyÕs still in love with me.

Yeah, go!

Uh-huh!

And when weÕre at a party

And I spot no-one else

And a friend would take you home tonight,

My heart just melts.

Would it be so sad if I just go away, baby?

Please answer ÒtrueÓ or Òfalse.Ó

You canÕt wait until we mend the day, baby.

Please answer ÒtrueÓ or Òfalse.Ó

Well, IÕm a-checking on your answers

So I can plan to see if my babyÕs true or false with me.

Uh-huh, uh-huh [repeat and fade out]

Teenage Fool

            Big 614 (1958)             (True Taylor)

They call me a fool,

A teenage fool over you.

They say youÕre plenty hung,

But IÕm still in love with you.

Just a teenage fool,

Who doesnÕt know the price you pay.

Just a crazy fool,

Who doesnÕt care what others say.

Well, now they say that you play round with other boys,

Well I guess thatÕs just the way you are,

Well, now you know, yeah, you know, that IÕll never go,

And IÕll always love you so.

When they see us going steady,

Well, then theyÕll think weÕll play it cool.

If they still think that you donÕt love me,

Well, then theyÕre just some teenage fool.

[repeat last two verses]

AhÉ ah-ah-ahÉ AhÉ ah-ah-ahÉ [repeat and fade out]

Just A Boy

            Warwick 552/Warwick 588 (1960)                (Jerry Landis)

I am just a boy,

not a mighty man.

But your love gives me strength

to do the best that I can.

I am just a boy,

unwise and full of fears.

But your love brings to me

the wisdom of many years.

Though IÕm young,

I still can understand

Your love someday

will turn this boy into a man.

Though IÕm just a boy,

on this you can rely:

You are just the girl

I will love till I die.

Shy

            Warwick 552 (1960)               (Jerry Landis)

Refrain:

Dum, dum, dum,

Dum-dee-dooby-dooby

Dum, dum, dum,

Dum-dee-dooby-dooby

Dum, mmmm-mmmm,

Shy.

Shy—IÕm so shy when IÕm with you.

DonÕt know what to say or do.

Gee, I wish I werenÕt shy.

I raise my hopes up to the sky,

But when you come walking by,

All that I can do is sigh.

Each night I look in my mirror

And practice what IÕm going to say to you.

I tell myself, ÒBe confident,Ó

But IÕm scared to death the minute that IÕm with you.

Doodly-doo-doo,

I know I love you Ôtill I die,

But no matter how I try,

I canÕt say it Ôcause IÕm shy.

[Refrain]

[Repeat last two verses]

[Refrain]

[Fade out]

ThatÕs My Story

            Big 618 (1958)             (Tom & Jerry)

My story really begins above the gods.

I saw you standing there; your eyes were aglow.

And then I could see that you werenÕt for me.

I go to sleep at night and dream of you.

I wish I could hold you tight the whole night through.

But when IÕm awake, (But when IÕm awake,)

I canÕt tell you I love you.

Woh-oh-ohÉ

My friends all tell me that I look the same:

Always moody and blue.

But they donÕt understand that IÕm not to blame.

IÕm so in love with you, oh!

Oh, lord above, please hear my prayer.

Tell me where she is, and take me there.

One moment alone, (One moment alone,)

And weÕll know weÕre in love.

[during fade out]

ThatÕsÉ myÉ storyÉ

Wild Flower

Amy 845 (1962)                     (Tico and the Triumphs)

Had a girl named Mary Lou. (wild flower)

She was a wanderer, through and through (wild flower)

She wasnÕt the type to be settled down. (wild flower)

Well, just like the wind, she would roll around.

Wild flower, wild flower, why do you roam?

Wild flower, wild flower, so far from home?
Traveling across those wide shores

Far across the sea.

Wild flower, come back to me.

-- Mangua nay ma hula nay

Wild flower

-- Mangua nay ma hula nay

How I love you

-- Mangua nay ma hula nay

Wild flower

Chorus:

Mangua nay ma hula nay

Mangua nay ma hi-lua

Mangua nay ma hula nay

Hay-ay-ay ay-ay-ay.

Then one day when I came home

I looked around and she was gone

Cried about her every hour

ÒHow I love my wild flower!Ó

Wild flower, wild flower, why do you roam?

Wild flower, wild flower, so far from home?
Traveling on her wide shores

Far across the sea.

Wild flower, come back to me.

Wild flower, wild flower,

Woo-oooÉ

[fade out]

A Soldier And A Song (Light Your Way)

Unknown origin (unreleased demo, maybe?)            (Jerry Landis, perhaps)

Here I lie on a battlefield

And my darling, IÕve not long to live.

I lie here thinking of all the things

To me you said and did.

So here, little love, is a song for you,

One that I love so.

And now, my darling, IÕll sing that song

As my time comes near to go.

The stars up above tell the story of our love,

As they shine so bright.

They will tell of how I held you darling,

Each and every night.

Oh the stars watched us as we walked alone

Yes, they watched us carefully.

Yes they watched you every night, my dear,

As you gave your live to me.

Although theyÕre way up in the sky

And cannot say a word

I know all the things that you said to me

Each little star has heard.

And now as the day goes rolling out.

And in rolls the dark of the night,

You may look up in the sky, my dear

And youÕll see me shine so bright.

For youÕve seen my love; IÕm just another star,

Way up in the sky.

And now my darling, I need not worry,

For I can never die.

Oh, sweet darling, forever and ever

In the sky I will stay.

And when at night you walk alone

I will always light your way,

Light your way, light your way.

Our Song

            Big 616 (1958)             (Tom & Jerry)

SheÕs goneÉ

The memory lives on.

Our song, I keep her in our song,

Even though I know you are gone.

The memory lives on.

Every deejay on the radio

Plays dedications but he doesnÕt know

That once upon a time, our song made two hearts chime

When you loved me so.

Our song, I keep her in our song,

Even though I know you are gone.

The memory lives on.

Now thereÕs nothing but the memories

Of times we used to spend so happily.

And yet somehow I know

SheÕs about the radio thatÕs a-playing our song.
