HIV/AIDS Surveillance Database (CIR)

The HIV/AIDS Surveillance Database produced by the Bureau of the Census's Center for International Research (CIR) is available via anonymous ftp (file transfer protocol) from the Consortium for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN). The following text describes how to access and obtain this data base.

The readme.1st file explains that the aidsnet.exe file is a self- extracting zip file that requires a DOS PC with at least 11 MB free on a hard disk. The largest executable program size must be at least 510K.

DATABASE DESCRIPTION

The HIV/AIDS database contains epidemiological information for developing countries presented at the 2nd International Conference on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific in New Delhi, India, November 1992 and the VIIth International Conference on AIDS in Africa in Yaounde, Cameroon, December 1992 as well as additional material from other sources. The database contains over 16,000 individual data records from nearly 2,200 publications and presentations. The Center for International Research has been compiling HIV seroprevalence information contained in journals, articles and public presentations since 1987.

Information included is almost exclusively from developing countries in Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, Asia and Oceania. Seroprevalence estimates for high and low risk population groups by country and region are presented in summary tables and plotted on maps for some areas. Tables are also provided for HIV-1 and HIV-2, where available, in major cities and rural areas.
