What is Cory Library?

---------------------

Cory Library houses material covering Southern African history and related fields. This material includes manuscripts, rare and modern books, newspapers, historical journals, maps, government publications, pictorial material, sound and video recordings and material in microform.

How do I find material in Cory Library?

---------------------------------------

All material housed in Cory Library is listed in detail on OPAC or in the catalogues in Cory Library.

Who can help me in the Cory Library?

------------------------------------

Cory Library has its own librarians who are always happy to assist you. The librarian on duty has an office at the main entrance to the Cory Library. If he or she is not in the office during the day, press the clearly marked buzzer for help. There is no Librarian on duty during the evening session and after 12:30 on Saturdays.

Are there any unusual regulations?

----------------------------------

All Rhodes staff and students using the Cory Library are asked to complete a user's card on their first visit to Cory each year. Visitors to the University must complete a an application form requesting permission to use the Cory Library. No material may be taken from Cory Library for photocopying without the permission of the Librarian on duty. Certain material cannot be borrowed.

Cory Library for Historical Research

Books, journals and other material in the field of Southern African history and related fields. [for details see separate guide]

Stanford Collection

-------------------

Rare and unusual books in all fields except Africana, which is in Cory Library. The collection began in 1927 with the gift by Sir Charles Thomas-Stanford of a collection of rare English works including a Shakespeare Fourth Folio, Sir Walter Raleigh's "History of the World" (1614), and Baskerville printings. Stanford books are housed in glass cases outside the Cory Library.

Smeath Thomas Welsh collection

------------------------------

Books and journals in Welsh or about Wales presented by a former master of Rhodes University College. This collection is being processed and its contents are not yet reflected in the catalogues.

Rolls Series, Calendars of State Papers, Historical Manuscripts Commission

---------------------------------------------------------------

These volumes contain published documents relating to the history of the United Kingdom from Mediaeval times.

Migne collection

----------------

A collection of the writings of the Greek and Latin Fathers of the Christian Church.

Bible collection

----------------

Rare and unusual bibles in a variety of languages.
