There is a service called the Rural Information Center (RIC) within the National Agriculture Library (NAL). RIC operates a subspecialty service called the Rural Information Center Health Service (RICHS) which provides "customized information products to specific inquiries including assistance in economic revitalization issues; local government planning projects; rural health issues; funding sources; and other related issues for the purpose of monitoring the quality of rural life." Topics include: community development projects; small business; tourism; recycling; water quality; technology transfer; "closures, restructuring and diversification of rural hospitals and clinics" [sounds like just what you were looking for Leslie]; agriculture health and safety; health programs; state initiatives in health delivery. RICHS staff will search various databases for requested information, provide bibliographies, and lists of organizations and experts.

By phone RICHS can be reached at 1-800-633-7701 Mon-Fri, 8 to 4:30 ET. Mail address is: Rural Information Center National Agriculture Library, Room 304 10301 Baltimore Blvd. Beltsville, MD 20705-2351

Internet address: ric@nalusda.gov

There is also an electronic bulletin board called the Agricultural Library Forum (ALF, of course) that contains much of the same info as well as discussion and downloadable files. Registration is available on-line. Set your communication parameters at 8-1-N full duplex. Only access numbers provided are long-distance from just about everywhere but Washington, D.C. (a very agricultural site I must say):
