CLANDESTINE

----------- * FREE VOICE OF ETHIOPIAN UNITY [Amharic: Yenetsa Radio Yeethiopia Andinet Dimts New], -; this station which is hostile to the Ethiopian and Eritrean governments, is transmitting in Amharic to EUROPE, M.East & Africa at 1600-1700 (Sun/Wed) on 11666v, 11695 and 15205 kHz (see also BDXC-bulletin 1/94). * VOICE OF THE EGYPT OF ARABISM [Arabic: Sawt al-'Urubah], -; was first heard as a seperate radio station on 26th August 1993. Previously it had formed an integral part of the programmes of Republic of Iraq Radio until it was last heard at 2310-2330 on 20th February 1993 on the main domestic service from Baghdad. The radio signs on with the Egyptian national anthem but material carried by the station is hostile to the government of Egypt. They are currently transmitting at 1000-1030 in Arabic on 11815(alt.) and 11875 kHz. (BBCM, 10/9/93)

----- * RADIO CAIRO, Cairo; transmission schedule: In English: 0200-0330 on 9475 and 11600 to America, 1215-1330 on 17595 kHz to Asia, 1630-1830 on 15255 kHz to Africa, 2030-2200 on 15375 kHz to Africa, 2115-2245 on 9900 kHz to EUROPE. In German: 1900-2000 on 9900 kHz to EUROPE. In French: 2000-2115 on 9900 kHz to EUROPE, 2030-2230 on 15335 kHz to Africa. In Italian: 1800-1900 on 9900 kHz to EUROPE. In Spanish: 0045-0200 on 9475, 9740 and 11715 kHz to America. In Portuguese: 2215-2330 on 15420 to America. (BBCM, 10/12/93)

ITALY

----- * RAI - ITALIAN RADIO AND TELEVISION, Rome; schedule until Sept. 26: In English: to MEDITERRANEAN AREA at 0415-0440 on 7275 and 9575 kHz, to Near East at 2025-2045 on 7235, 9575 and 11800 kHz, In French: to N.Africa at 1630-1655 on 7235 and 9710 kHz, In Portuguese: to Brazil at 0120-0135 on 11905 and 15245 kHz, to PORTUGAL at 2110-2130 on 7275 and 9575 kHz.

LIBERIA

------- * RADIO ELBC, Monrovia; the pro-Nigerian-ECOMOG, continues to broadcast on 7275 kHz, despite reports that it went off the air in May '93. Pro-Charles Taylor Radio ELBC based in Gbarnga also continues to broadcast. * RADIO ELWA, Monrovia; this Christian religious station operated by the Sudan Interior Mission (SIM) is transmitting in English at 0600-0830 and 1630-2200 on 4760 kHz. MALTA

----- * VOICE OF THE MEDITERRANEAN, Valetta; this broadcasting service which is jointly run by Malta and Lybia from studios in Valetta using Deutsche Welle relay transmitters in Malta, has programmes in English at 0600-0700 to M.East on 1557, 9765 kc and at 1400-1500 to EUROPE & M.East on 11925 kHz. NIGER

----- * VOIX DU SAHEL, Niamey; transmission schedule: 0430-0659 on 1041, 1125, 1215, 1484, 1575, 3260(alt.), 5020 and 7155 kHz, 0700-1630 on 1125, 1215, 1484, 1575, 6060, 7155 and 9705 kHz, 1630-2300 on 1125, 1215, 1484, 1575, 3260(alt.), 5020, and 7155(alt.) kHz. (BBCM, 20/8/93)

RWANDA

------ * RADIODIFF. DE LA RPUBLIQUE RWANDAISE, Kigali; has the following schedule: in Kinyarwanda at 0300-1400 on 6055 and 9610 kHz and at 1400-2100 on 6055 kHz, in Shawili and English at 1400-1800 on 9610 kHz and in French at 1800-2100 on 15340 kHz. They appear to have dropped the use of its longstanding frequency of 3330 kHz. (BBCM, 17/9/93)

SEYCHELLES

---------- * F(ar) E(ast) B(roadcasting) A(ssociation) RADIO, Mahe; this Christian evangelical broadcaster can be heard as from 5 September 1993 in English to M.East on 17750 kHz at 0500-0553 (Fri), to Asia (International Programma) on 9810 and 15330 kHz at 1500-1600 (Exc. Sun) and to S.Asia on 11710 kHz at 1500-1555. Transmissions in French can be heard at 0915-0930 to Africa on 15430 kHz and at 1833-1848 and 1848-1903 (Exc. Tue/Wed) to Africa on 9565 kHz and finally a transmission in Portuguese at 1830-1845 to Africa on 7270 kHz. Addr: P.O.Box 234, Seychelles. (BBCM, 17/9/93)

SOMALIA

------- * RADIO AWDAL, Boorama; this station, controlled by the Gadabursi clan, reportedly broadcasts at 1630-1700 on 6500 kHz. (BBCM, 1/10/93) * RADIO HARGEISA, The voice of the Republic of Somaliland [Somali: Halkani wa Radio Hargeisa, Codka Jamhuriyada Somaliland], Hargeisa; this station, which is believed to operate from a 1-kW mobile transmitter, is scheduled at 1000-1230 and 1500-1700 on 7120v kHz. (BBCM, 24/9/93) * RADIO MANTA, Mogadishu; this station was originally run by the US military and identified itself as Radio Rajo (Radio Hope), the voice of the Unified Task Force. The name was changed to Radio Manta [English: Radio Today] with the handover of command from the US-led Operation Restore Hope to UNOSOM-2 (UN Operation in Somalia Phase 2) on 4th May 1993. They are currently transmitting (in Somali only) as follows: 0415-0500, 1000-1045, 1100-1145 and 1300-1345 on 1480 and 9540 kHz, 1600-1645, 1700-1745 and 1900-1945 on 1480 and 6170 kHz. The shortwave transmitter operates in USB mode plus carrier and has a power of 600 Watts. (BBCM, 10/12/93) * RADIO MOGADISHU, The voice of the Great Somali People [Somali: Radio Mogadishu, Codka ummad weeynta Soomaaliyeed], -; this pro- Muhammad Farah Aydid station is transmitting on a variable frequency of 6870 kHz at 1500-1800. (BBCM, 1/10/93) * VOICE OF FREE SOMALIA [Somali: Idaacada Madaxa Banaan ee Somailia], Gaalkacyo; can be heard with transmissions in English at 0500-0515 on 7460 kHz and at 1800-1815 on 7499 kHz. The station began broadcasting on 18 August 1993 and appears to be controlled by the Somali Salvation Democratic Front (SSDF). It was set up with assistance from the Australian-based International Amataeur Radio Network. (BBCM, 27/8/93)

SUDAN

----- * RADIO NATIONAL UNITY OF RADIO OMDURMAN, Omdurman; is scheduled with transmissions in English at 1245-1315 (also Arabic) and 1500-1530 on 9165 kHz (alt. 9170, 9180 or 9190 kHz). (BBCM, 13/8/93) * RADIO OMDURMAN, Omdurman; has been heard in French at 1700-1800 and in English at 1800-1900 on 9170 kHz. (RW via CJO, 4/12/93) * VOICE OF THE NATION, Khartoum; is now also broadcasting on shortwave 7200 kHz in parallel with 1296 kHz at 1700-1900. (BBCM, 10/9/93)

--------- * T(rans) W(orld) R(adio), Manzini; transmission schedule valid until 6 November 1993: In English: 0430-0700 on 3200 kHz, 0430-0530 on 7200 and 7215 kHz, 0530-0835 on 7200 and 11740 kHz, 0835-0850 (Mon-Fri) on 11740 kc, 1600-1700 on 9500 kHz, 1700-1715 on 7120 kHz, 1715-1730 (Mon-Fri) on 7120 kHz, 1730-2045 on 1170 kHz, 1800-1845 on 9500 kHz, 1800-2015 on 3200 kHz, 1900-2045 on 3240 kHz, 2015-2045 (Sun) on 3200 kHz. In German: 0400-0430 on 5055 kHz, 0430-0500 on 3395 kHz. In French: 1515-1545 on 9650 kHz, 1930-2000, 2000-2015 (Sat/Sun) on 9520 kc. In Portuguese: 0305-0350 (Mon-Fri) on 3335 kHz, 1425-1430 (Mon-Fri) and 1430-1515 on 9515 kHz, 1900-1945 and 1945-1950 (Mon-Fri) on 7180 kHz. All transmissions are directed to Africa only.
