What is COOP?

The Cooperative Grants Program of NAFSA: Association of International Educators encourages the development of programs designed to strengthen and enrich the educational experience of international students attending U.S.colleges and universities and U.S. students participating in study abroad. COOP awards grants for projects that help students become more involved in and knowledgeable about their host culture and community. These grants are made available through funding from the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the United States Information Agency (USIA), under the authority of the Fulbright-Hays Act of 1961 as amended.

"Minigrants" Available

Small grants are awarded to institutions which seek to implement projects requiring less than $1,000. DEADLINE: Minigrant proposals may be submitted at any time.

$6,000 Incentive Grants Available

Grant requests of up to $6,000 are reviewed by a committee of international educators. The committee seeks to promote internationalization of the campus via innovative projects that encourage foreign students and scholars to become involved in U.S. culture and society apart from their study/research programs. Predeparture orientation and re-entry programs for U.S. study abroad students are also considered. Deadline: October 12, 1994 for completed preliminary proposal forms; postmarks and faxes not accepted. Applicants selected by the committee need to submit a full proposal that should be received by this office no later than December 14, 1994. Awards will be made in early January 1995. Tentative Spring 1995 Deadlines: Preliminary proposals due: March 14. 1995: Full proposals due: May 16, 1995; Funds awarded: June 23. 1995.

Who Can Apply?

Community volunteers, faculty members. foreign student advisers, career planning and placement advisers.residence hall staff. health and counseling professionals, study abroad advisers and administrators, and other community- and campus-based individuals with programming ideas that provide substantial international student interaction with their American peers and host community are invited to apply. K-12 institutions are ineligible. Membership in NAFSA is not required. Special consideration will be given to proposals submitted by two or more institutions or organizations that demonstrate the sharing of resources and programming experience. Each participating institution must be actively involved in the planning, promotion and implementation of the project. Proposals from Community Colleges and HBCUs are encouraged.

Topics of Interest

While all proposals submitted to COOP should meet the criteria listed below, the Cooperative Grants Committee is particularly interested in proposals for Fall 1994 related to the following priorities

* introducing students to the U.S. political process including government structure, the role of the media, and grass roots movements as vehicles for political change;

* exploring diversity/complexities of ethnic, racial, religious, sexual orientation, and gender relations in the United States and abroad through individual and group contacts;

* meeting the special needs of special groups of international students (e.g. students from Korea, the Newly Independent States, minority study abroad students)

How Are Projects Selected for Funding?

Proposals are reviewed by the Cooperative Grants Committee, which is composed of NAFSA: Association of International Educators members. All proposals are evaluated by the following criteria:

* degree of substantive interaction between students and the host culture/community;

* demonstrated student interest in project;

* potential of the project as a national model:

* possibility of the project continuing after COOP funding has ceased;

* use of experience from previously funded models.
