PRE-DISSERTATION GRANTS

- AFRICAN STUDIES ASSOCIATION- James H. Robinson Award. Purpose: To encourage creative work in the area of African studies. Number Offered: One per annum. Value: U.S. $250. Tenable: For initial visits of up to six months to Africa. Eligibility: Candidates must have conducted their research within three years of the application date. Note: Written essays as well as tapes, films, photo essays, and pictorial art are available. Closing Dates: 30th September; 31st August. - ASSOCIATION FOR WOMEN IN SCIENCE, INC. (AWIS)- Pre-doctoral Awards. Program Description: These awards support pre-doctoral students in any field of the sciences, including the social sciences. Eligibility Limitations: These awards support women at the pre-doctoral level of study. Financial Data: Four awards of $500 each can be used for any aspect of doctoral education, including books, housing, research, tuition, equipment etc., and can be used in the United States or abroad. - COMMITTEE ON INSTITUTIONAL COOPERATION- MINORITIES FELLOWSHIPS PROGRAM IN THE SOCIAL SCIENCES. Purpose: Designed to increase the representation of various minority groups among Ph.D. degree recipients in the social sciences (Anthropology, Political Science, Psychology, Economics, Sociology, Geography, History). Grants Available: A total of 25 fellowships will be awarded for each academic year. The fellowships may be used at any one of eleven CIC universities. Awards: Provides full tuition for the academic year plus an annual stipend. Length of Award: 2 years, with further financial support from the student's chosen university for an additional two years. (Each annual renewal is contingent upon satisfactory performance and normal progress towards the Ph.D.). Conditions of Award: All applicants must be U.S. Citizens; Fellowship recipients must pursue programs of study leading to Ph.D. degrees and must be accepted as graduate students by at least one of the CIC universities; The fellowships can be used only at the CIC universities. Who May Apply: 1. U.S. citizens who hold or will receive a bachelor's degree from a regionally-accredited college or university; 2. U.S. citizens who hold or will receive a master's degree from a regionally- accredited college or university or students currently enrolled in graduate study. (Note: Since this program is intended to increase minority enrollments in the CIC universities, currently enrolled graduate students in the eleven CIC universities are not eligible to apply). - E. B. FRED FELLOWSHIPS. Purpose: To support Ph.D. candidates with a recent, lengthy (at least five years) interruption in their studies. Requirements: Applicants who have earned more than 12 credits during the interruption period will not normally be considered. Awards: One semester. Applications are available in the Fellowships Office in November and will be due early in February or early March.

- FORD MINORITY DOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS. Purpose: To support minority candidates in a Ph.D. program in the social sciences or humanities. Requirements: U.S. citizen. The minority candidate must be about to begin or in the early stages of graduate study (not more than 30 semester hours). Awards: The fellowship will be a three-year award with an annual stipend plus tuition and fees. Applications are available in September with a deadline usually in November. - INTERNATIONAL FELLOWS PROGRAM. Field study opportunities in grass-roots, self-help, economic development projects in Tanzania, Central Africa Republic, Swaziland, Cote d'Ivoire, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Zimbabwe, Niger, Guinea, Ethiopia, Cameroon, Botswana, and Zaire. - THE JACOB K. JAVITS FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM. Purpose: To support first year graduate students (with 20 or fewer graduate credits) who intend to obtain a doctoral degree in the arts, humanities, or social sciences. Requirements: U.S. citizen, permanent resident of U.S.; enrolled as a full-time student in a graduate program in the arts, humanities, social sciences, or a multidisciplinary program with a focus on one of these three fields. Awards: One academic year, renewable annually, $10,000.

- METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART- Art History Fellowships. Purpose: The Metropolitan Museum's resources help the applicant accomplish her/his goals. Awards: $15,000 for pre-doctoral fellows, additional $2,500 for travel. Deadline: November. - RESEARCH INSTITUTE FOR THE STUDY OF MAN- RISM LANDES AWARDS. Annual awards are for research on subjects that will advance our interdisciplinary understanding of race or ethnic relations, aging or gender issues. Five training grants ($2,500) are offered each year in support of short field projects that provide training in disciplinary methods and techniques. - ROTARY FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS (of Rotary International). Purpose: To further international understanding among peoples of different countries. Requirements: Appearances before Rotary clubs and school and civic organizations during and after the stay. An applicant must be a citizen of a country in which there is a Rotary club. Ability to speak the language of the country. Awards: Covers round- trip travel, all academic fees, room and board on campus. One academic year in another country where Rotary clubs are located. - SOCIAL SCIENCE RESEARCH COUNCIL. 1. Social Science Research Council/ American Council of Learned Societies International Predissertation Fellowship Program. Purpose: To increase number of graduate students in the social sciences in research and teaching careers oriented to developing countries through individual training fellowships and participation in methodological workshops relating to the development of original data sets and research materials. Requirements: Candidate must be a Ph.D. student enrolled at one of the selected universities in early phases of their training with interest in area and language studies. Candidate must work with their disciplinary advisor and an area specialist in the design of a one-to two-year training program at some combination of their home institution and others focusing on a part of the developing world. Awards: To provide 12 months of support for language training, overseas study, and course work in area studies, in addition to living stipends. Awards will not be tenable for dissertation research itself.

2. Predissertation Research Fellowships- Africa. Purpose: To support short-term field trips to sub-Saharan Africa to encourage preliminary research activities, collaboration, and planning for students preparing for dissertation research on Africa. Applications are encouraged from two groups of students: Africanists in disciplines that are currently underrepresented in African studies (economics, humanities, psychology, sociology), and students planning research on issues concerning African agriculture, health or environment. Requirements: Enrolled in a full- time Ph.D. program at a U.S. university, or U.S. citizen or permanent resident enrolled in such a program abroad. Students must have completed at least one year in a full-time Ph.D. program. Awards may not be used for dissertation research.
