About Flight Simulator 5.0- Kenya

KENYA.DOC - Enrico Schiratti CIS 100137,457

Please bear with me, and simply accept that I had to write something about this scenery. If you are looking for a list of the runways and navaids, skip this and find them at the end of the text. Thanks.

First of all the credits: I would like to express my utmost gratitude to Maurizio Gavioli for his help, as well as someone else for intensive beta-testing.

Thanks also go to Mr. So-and-so, another individual and DNA.

Last, and surely not least, thanks to those who brought Flight Simulation to our PCs and lots of new ideas to many of us.

Friendly warning: It would be of extremely bad taste to ask money for this scenery, so I don't do it, and I *do* expect that no one else does so. In poor words: Don't sell this.

Please ask for permission if this is to be part of any free- or shareware oriented media.

Requirements: Flight Simulator Version 5.00 or newer. If FS5 runs on your PC, then this will too.

Files included in KENYA.ZIP: KENYA.DOC - this text KENYA.BGL - FS5 scenery file KENYA.GIF - GIF map of the scenery

How to: Copy KENYA.BGL into your \FS5\SCENERY directory. Start FS5 and select one of the airports in your "World"-"Airports"-"East Africa-Kenya" list (no STN files necessary then).

The rest is up to you.

This scenery does not modify anything in your FS5 setup, no other files are added, altered, removed etc. To uninstall, simply delete or move this file.

Advised literature: Jeppesen Airway Manual Africa 1 and 2 or any other chart of this region. Carefully read the "Entry Requirements" . A tourist book about Kenya.

About the country: Surface 582646 square Km Inhabitants 23 millions Capital Nairobi 1.6 million Language English and Swahili

I will not comment on the political situation.

About the scenery: This is my first attempt (or better my third, but you'll never get to see the other two ) in designing scenery. I am not a designer, I'm a programmer - and I wouldn't even put my hand in a fire for that. In this case an exception had to be made, and I'm afraid that there are more to come.

Why Kenya? I was extremely happy when I discovered that FS5 had the whole world at its disposal, and I have always been dreaming of having sceneries of far away places. I spent 3 years of my life in this fabulous country (not that it helped much in making this scenery), so I thought it might be a good idea.

Now the quality of this scenery is not high, it has several flaws I will try to remove soon, and I avoided putting in stuff that would slow down operations too much.

I greatly appreciate comments on any bugs not mentioned below.

Airports:

There are 41 runways in this edition, all positioned according to the Jeppesen "Airport Directory". A condition was that I only took at least "bitumen" runways, as the rendition of FS5 grass strips leaves much to be desired.

Only Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu and Malindi are accurate, as I couldn't find extensive data on the other ones. That may come someday, this is just a test. I *invented* the layouts of many small airports, leaving out others (except for the runway itself). So please don't laugh if you know one or the other strip.

Navigation:

All navaids are accurate, thanks to one of those mentioned above. No maps are included, but a list of the navaids can be found at the end of this text.

I'll think about a solution for this. Anyway, follow the roads and they'll get you somewhere.

Other:

Sightseeing in this BGL is not really a big issue. There are two or three buildings in Nairobi (Uhuru Centre and The Hilton) as well as Fort Jesus in Mombasa. No lions and zebras. I'll think about those in future versions.

Lake Victoria and Lake Rudolph is fairly well reproduced as well as the coast towards the Indian Ocean.

The network of roads is relatively extensive, that will also be dealt with later. Generally you can use the roads for VFR, as they lead to the airports as well.

Mt. Kenya is an offence I hope I won't be trialed for. Out of respect for the highest mountain in Africa (The Kilimanjaro), I left it out altogether. As soon as these techniques have been refined I will include both of them as well as a few others.

Textures weren't used a lot, as they tend to blink in the wrong moment. Too bad.

Some 3D objects bleed-through, no idea why, but that will have to come to an end someday.

The Land-Me feature for all airports in the Airport List has been activated. Check it out.

Oh yes, due to the extreme altitude jumps in this country, I have had a hard time flying in certain places, as well sometimes the "flying runway" phenomenon occurred. I have that on my list already.

All in all the pros outweigh the cons, so I decided to upload already this version.

Share and enjoy.

... and now to something completely different:
