The Blind Pig, 6 Taylor Street Champaign, will be presenting the following
African and Africa-inspired bands.
Jan. 21: Mantuilla Nyomo and the Soukous Soul Band from Zaire features one of the finest soukous
guitarists alive. Performance begins at 9:30.
Feb. 4: Roots Rock Society serves up reggae in Spanish, English, Amharic and Swahili.
Feb. 8: The Lion of Soweto returns! Mahlathini and the Mahotella Queens will perform at the
Blind Pig starting at 9:00. South Africa's legendary township vocalist will be
accompanied by the Makgona Tsohe Band. The show starts at 9:00. Do not miss this.
CENTER NEWS
The center welcomes Professor Denver HENDRICKS of the University of the Western Cape who is visiting campus as part of the South African Fellows program. Hendricks' research concerns the role of sports in South African society.
The center has a limited supply of books by the Kenyan author Micere Mugo, who spoke on campus last Spring. The following titles are available: Daughter of My People Sing, $5.00; Trail of Dedan Kimathi, $8.00; The Long Illness of Ex-Chief Kiti, $8.00; Visions of Africa, $10.00.
Congratulations to the African Students Organization for successfully producing its first issue of its newsletter, UMOJA.
The center congratulates African studies faculty for recent births. Tahar Zenan Bowen-Pinto was born to Fermino Pinto and Merle Bowen on January 13. Ezra Paul Winter-Nelson was born to Alex and Karen Winter-Nelson on December 11.

The Rockefeller Foundation African Dissertation Internship Awards offer doctoral students from sub-Saharan Africa support for field research. Priority is given to research in the fields of agriculture, health, population, life sciences, environment, and schooling. Foreign Language Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships are available through the Center for African Studies for UIUC graduate students whose interests relate to Africa and who will be studying an indigenous African language during this summer or the coming academic year. The Office of Food for Peace of the U.S. Agency for International Development will encourage overseas USAID missions and private voluntary organizations to pay the expenses of graduate students conducting research in areas of food policy, public health, anthropology, agricultural economics, nutrition and related fields. Selected students will participate in the design and impact evaluation of U.S. funded food aid programs abroad. SUMMER LANGUAGE TRAINING
Eight-week intensive courses in advanced Hausa and Yoruba will be offered in Nigeria through the Association of African Studies Programs (AASP) under the Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad (GPA) program. Applications are available at the Center for African Studies or from the Department of African Languages and Literature, 866 Van Hise Hall, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Madison, WI 53706.
The AASP is also offering an opportunity to study Swahili in Tanzania this summer. Applications for this program are available at the center. The deadline is February 10.
