CENTER NEWS
The Center is offering prizes of $100 for the winners of our annual Africa- related paper competition. Awards will be given for the best graduate and undergraduate papers. Papers are evaluated by a multi-disciplinary committee; they should be non-technical, of interest beyond the discipline in which they are written, and less than 30 pages. The committee seeks quality research, originality, and lucid prose. Deliver submissions, marked "African Studies Paper Prize," to the Center. Papers may be nominated by faculty or students up to May 1.
FACULTY NEWS
William MARTIN's (sociology) essay on "The World System: A Global Social Structure? Evaluating the Advancement of the World-Systems Perspective" has just been published in Recent Developments in the Theory of Social Structures, edited by David Knotternus and Christopher Prendergast.
Valerie HOFFMAN-LADD, religious studies, spoke on "Eating and Fasting for God in Sufi Tradition" in conjunction with a Middle East Studies Society lecture program on November 10 at the UIUC.
Donald CRUMMEY, African studies/history, Ezekiel KALIPENI, geography, and Michael WEST, history, made presentations at the African Studies Association meetings in Toronto in November.
STUDENT NEWS
Awuor AYODO, comparative literature, Edward MINER, linguistics, Rosa De JORIO, anthropology, Raymond TAYLOR, history, Stephen WOOTEN, anthropology, Jonathan ZILBERG anthropology, presented papers at the African Studies Association Annual Meeting in Toronto and Mbulelo JOKWENI, linguistics, presented a paper in the Linguistics Seminar Series in November.
Vincent MAHALI, history, Ayana DANIEL, history, Flavianus MAGAYANE, agricultural economics, and Aminata SOUMARE, education policy studies, successfully defended their dissertations in November. Vincent and Magayane will return to South Africa and Tanzania, respectively, to take up university teaching positions and Daniel will continue teaching at Illinois State University in Bloomington-Normal.
The executive committee of the African Students Organization plans to publish a newsletter at the end of this semester and seeks the following: 1. Suggested names for the newsletter; 2. Articles for publication; 3. Volunteers for the editorial board. Contact Moses Kambou (344-8262).

STUDENTS
The Rockefeller Foundation African Dissertation Internship Awards offer support for field research to doctoral students from sub-Saharan Africa. Priority is given to research in the fields of agriculture, health, population, life sciences, environment, and education. The Social Science Research Council (SSRC) offers International Predissertation Fellowships providing twelve months of support over a period of up to two years for area studies training to prepare students for dissertation research. The Center for Afroamerican and African Studies at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor announces a Rockefeller Foundation Resident Fellowship for work on the theme "African Peoples in the Industrial Age." The Center also offers Du Bois-Mandela-Rodney resident fellowships on the theme "Gender and Urban Poverty." PROFESSIONAL EMPLOYMENT
The University of California at Los Angeles, Program in Women's Studies is conducting an open discipline search for a scholar whose teaching and research interests focus on the study of women of color. Eastern Illinois University seeks applications for a tenure track position in political science teaching courses on political modernization, third world politics, ideologies of the third world, and introductory American politics. Gettysburg College is seeking applications for a visiting scholar to participate in the College's 1995-97 African Area Studies program. The visitor will teach two courses each semester in areas of her or his specialty and assist in a year-long interdisciplinary seminar on Africa's environmental challenges in a socio-historical context. SUMMER LANGUAGE TRAINING
Eight-week intensive courses in advanced Hausa and Yoruba will be offered in Nigeria through the Association of African Studies programs under the Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad (GPA) program.
