MSU ANNOUNCEMENTS

Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship applications for Academic Year 1996-97 and Summer 1996 are available at the African Studies Center. The Intensive Summer Language Institute will be Amharic for 1996. Deadline for submission of all references, transcripts, and forms relating to the FLAS application is February 16, 1996.

CASID (The Center for Advanced Study of International Development) FLAS awards are made for all levels of Arabic, Portuguese and Swahili and intermediate and advanced levels only of Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish. Additionally, applicants must have a strong international development focus. FLAS applications for Summer 1996 and academic year 1996 - 1997 are available in the CASID office, 306 Berkey. Deadline March 11, 1996.

1996-97 Thoman Fellowship Program applicants are being sought. Application forms are available from the Office of the Dean, International Studies and Programs, 207 International Center. Application deadline is March 1, 1996.

Overseas Study Program Development Grants are available through International Studies and Programs to support the development of overseas study programs. The application deadline for the next funding cycle of the Overseas Study Program Development Grants is March 1, 1996, for fall 1996 consideration. The Walker Hill International Scholarship is available for MSU doctoral students at the predissertation stage. It is to be used for predissertation visits to the site of the doctoral research in a country outside of the United States (for international students, research in one,s own country does not qualify). A letter of application must be submitted by each student to Dr. Dawn Pysarchik, Acting Associate Dean, International Studies and Programs, 207 International Center, describing the use to which the scholarship funds would be put in the context of the student,s overall program of study. A copy of the student,s official academic transcript should be sent directly to International Studies and Programs (ISP). Two letters of support from faculty should be sent directly to ISP, including one from the student,s

An Intensive Advanced Swahili course in Tanzania is being offered from June 19 - August 14, 1996. The Association of African Studies Programs (AASP) offers this eight-week intensive course with the support of the U.S. Department of Education Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad (GPA). The course will be directed by the Council on African Studies, Yale University, and the Department of Kiswahili, University of Dar es Salaam. Completed application packet including official transcripts and letters of reference must be submitted and received by Feb. 14, 1996. Tropical Appetites: Fine Cooking and Dining in Tanzania, the first

The Canadian Research Consortium of Southern Africa (CRCSA)

announce publication of a collection of course outlines on Southern Africa. Teaching Southern African Studies contains 42 graduate and undergraduate course outlines drawn from the following disciplines: Anthropology, Geography, History, Literature, Political Science, Sociology, Urban Studies and Women's Studies. CONFERENCES

The Berkeley-Stanford Joint Center for African Studies Annual Spring Conference will be held April 27, 1996 at Berkeley. The theme of the conference is "Migration in Africa: Political Traffic Across Environment and Culture." In addition to the theme of migration, the center encourages papers related to the themes of democracy and liberalization, law and colonialism, race and identity, South Africa in transition, natural resource management, and disease and health care. The African Diaspora and the Modern World is the title of a conference to be held February 21 - 25, 1996. It will be hosted by the University of Texas at the Austin Center for African and African American Studies, in conjunction with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The Center for Afroamerican and African Studies at the University of Michigan has established an interdisciplinary and international project on "Africa Peoples in the Industrial Age." Applications from postdoctoral scholars in the humanities for a one-year

A Rockefeller Resident Humanities Fellowship Program is being offered at the Institute for the Study of Gender in Africa at UCLA. The James Coleman African Studies Center, in coordination with The Center for the Study of Women invites applications in three priority areas: Development of multidisciplinary approaching gender in Africa; the examination of the historical dimensions of gender in Africa,s early and precolonial past; and the study of culture and gender. To apply, submit a 100-word abstract; a proposal of no more than 1500 words detailing the research agenda, its theoretical basis, and its scholarly relevance; a full c.v. and three letters of recommendation. The African Studies Center at Boston University seeks a Publications Editor. The Publications Editor may also hold an adjunct faculty position in an academic department. Part-time teaching is a possibility but not a requirement for this position. The position is available as of January 2, 1996 and the search will continue until the position is filled. Save the Children - Canada is seeking applications for the position of Program Manager. This is a contract position (2 years, with benefits) and includes supervision of programming and administration of SCC's activities in 4 countries: Haiti, Mali, Burkina-Faso and Jamaica; working with Program team of 6 members in general program development and planning, research on strategic orientations, fund-raising, methodologies and implementation tools for programming community development. The requirements include: a solid background in International Development, preferably with overseas experience; university degree in a related field; and bilingual French-English.
