Documents human rights abuses by governments and armed
opposition groups in 140 countries, in the period from
January 1997 to December 1997, challenging rulers to
affirm the Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted
50 years ago.
The larger part of the report [293 pages] is organised by country. A typical country entry is introduced with a map, and may report on the government's abuse of power, look at human rights in historical perspective, report on particular cases and on executions, etc. The report on France highlights laws relating to service in the [armed] forces and like the report on Germany highlights the police treatment of detainees, and non-citizens. Cuba and Nigeria feature for the imprisonment of hundreds of prisoners of conscience. The UK entry is largely concerned with events in the north of Ireland, the USA entry highlights 74 executions.
