Graduate Study at CGS

The College of General Studies provides a variety of degree and non-degree options for students who want to take advantage of Penn's excellence as a research university by pursuing graduate study. Students who wish to earn a master's degree can do so through several options:

Students who are interested in preparing for applications to doctoral programs may elect to participate in the Non-Traditional Graduate Studies Program, which enables students to enroll in department-based graduate courses in the School of Arts and Sciences on a non-degree basis (with departmental permission).

Graduate students at CGS are a diverse group who come from a variety of backgrounds, for many different reasons. Some are professionals who want to develop knowledge of a content area or improve their credentials for the workplace. Others are exploring the possibility of applying to doctoral programs, and want to update their transcripts, explore possible fields of study, and strengthen their applications to doctoral programs. Many students enroll in CGS simply to be part of a vibrant intellectual community, engage in stimulating discussions with faculty and students, and continue to learn and stretch themselves intellectually.

CGS graduate programs include among their students working professionals who are part-time students, as well as students who elect to pursue their studies on a full-time basis. As the choice of a graduate program is an important decision, CGS program advisors are happy to discuss options for graduate study with prospective students. We encourage prospective students to explore the CGS web site for more specific program information, including requirements for admission, curriculum, and contact information.
