The Penn Institute for Urban Research (Penn IUR) is a university-wide body that builds on Penn's record as an urban institution and enhances the field of urban scholarship through a commitment to understanding cities on a global scale. The Penn IUR mission is to foster increased understanding of cities and developing new knowledge that will be vital in charting the course of local, national, and international urbanization in the decades ahead. Penn IUR is dedicated to understanding the city- and community-building process, exploring urban growth patterns, and understanding why place matters for phenomena occurring in the urban world. The Institute is further committed to linking this knowledge to public policy, emphasizing Penn's traditional belief in the need to connect theory and practice.
