Penn-in-Alicante, Spain

Main | Description | Curriculum

“One of the greatest summers of my life! Professors great, experiences great, classes great. Great learning (cultural experience)! Thank you.”

Penn-in-Alicante is a program in the language, literature, and culture of Spain offered by the University of Pennsylvania at the Universidad de Alicante, one of Spain's newest and most modern universities. In its combination of academic study, and the opportunity to enjoy Spanish culture, Penn-in-Alicante provides a unique learning experience for undergraduate students.

Alicante is a city located in the prosperous eastern region of Spain. At the present time, it has a little over 350,000 inhabitants. The city enjoys one of Spain’s best climates, having an average of 3,000 hours of sun during the year. The beach of El Postiget is downtown, and shuttle busses and the train make it easy to commute to a nearby 10-mile beach, the famous Playa de San Juan, one of the best beaches in Europe. The city is also well communicated with modern highways going to Granada in the south; to Valencia, Barcelona, and France in the north; and to Madrid and Seville in the west. In addition, there are daily shuttle ferry connections between Alicante and the Balearic islands (Majorca, Menorca, and Ibiza) in the Mediterranean sea.

Penn-in-Alicante courses are taught by Penn faculty or by faculty of the Universidad de Alicante. Classes are offered Monday through Friday between 9 a.m and 1 p.m. Students have the opportunity to travel on weekends to the destinations of their choice.  Upon arriving in Alicante, students will be accommodated with local families. Hence, course work will be enriched through regular contact with Spanish natives.
