Main | Description | Curriculum
All students are expected to register either for one 2 CUs course or two 1 CU courses.
Prerequisite: Spanish 120 or Spanish 112.
Spanish 134 combines the two semesters of second-year Spanish at Penn. Taking advantage of the program’s cultural and linguistic immersion, this course fosters speaking, listening, reading and writing skills by providing instruction in a lively and motivating cultural context. A variety of communicative and analytical teaching methods is implemented in the classroom. Students learn to use Spanish in increasingly more complex ways, in class as well as in real life. (2 CUs)
NOTE: The following two courses have a prerequisite of two semesters of Spanish beyond 140. Exceptions can only be made for students fully functional in Spanish, able to follow a class in which the readings, writing and discussions are conducted in Spanish only.
To discuss the language prerequisite students should contact Dr. Jorge Salessi, the Program’s Director: Jsalessi@sas.upenn.edu.

Spanish 224 is a survey of major works of contemporary Argentine literature relating to the political, social and cultural developments that have defined the modern profile of the country. The course focuses on the way literary works reflect the sometimes profound contradictions of Argentine modernity; the conflicts between Buenos Aires and the “interior”; natives and foreigners; men and women; patricians and proletarians; civil society and the military. Through a study of their impact on the country’s literature, we will trace the evolution of these conflicts from the 1880s to the present. (1 CU)

While focusing on economic, political and social developments, the class will explore the tensions and paradoxes of Argentina during the XIX and XX centuries: the wars of independence and the lengthy conflict for dominance between centralist and federalist interests; the emergence of the modern nation and its integration to the world economy after 1880; immigration, the “alluvial society” and the influence of culture and intellectuals on the creation of the state; the effects of rapid cultural modernization and the dramatic years of Juan and Eva Peron; military dictatorships, democracy, economic default and recuperation. (1 CU)
Note for non-Penn students: One CU is generally considered to be equivalent to three semester hours in cases in which Penn coursework is transferred to another institution.
