  • Program Profile: For students interested in Italian language, literature, civilization and art history.
  • Program Dates: May 31 – July 13, 2008

    • Arrive on May 31. Check out of hotel/depart on July 13.
    • Classes begin: June 2.
  • Language Requirements: See the curriculum page regarding language prerequisites.
  • Curriculum Requirements: Students to register for one 2-CU course or two 1-CU courses.

    • Italian 110: Beginning Italian (1 CU)

    • Italian 134: Intensive Second-year Italian (2 CUs)

    • Italian 220: Streets of Florence, Words of Italy (1 CU)

    • Art History 251: The Art of the Florentine Renaissance in Context (1 CU)

For students interested in Italian language, literature, civilization and art history. Italianists consider Penn-in-Florence, established in 1979, to be the top such program sponsored by any North American institution. Taking advantage of the unique location in the heart of Tuscany, the courses explore the history of Florence and the Medici dynasty. Florentine Renaissance art can be studied first-hand in the city’s museums, churches palaces and gardens. Intensive Italian-language classes are taught in Italian at all levels. In addition, the program offers cultural activities in Florence and trips to Assisi and Siena. The average enrollment for the program is 60 students.
