Korean Summer Language Institute
As part of the National Security Language Initiative, a U.S. government interagency effort to expand the number of Americans studying and mastering critical need foreign languages, the United States Department of State and (CAORC) have made available full scholarships for intensive overseas study in the Korean language. All program costs will be covered by these scholarships, including travel to and from the student’s home city and Korea, pre-departure orientation costs, visa fees, room, board, travel within Korea, and entrance fees for program activities.
The University of Pennsylvania has partnered with Kyung Hee University, a private Korean university, to offer the Korean Summer Language Institute in Seoul. The program is equivalent to one year of college-level coursework in Korean. Upon completion of the program, students should expect to advance on proficiency level, based on individual efforts.
To apply for admission to this program, all applications must be directed not to Penn Summer Abroad but to the Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC). Please visit the following web site and follow the instructions: www.caorc.org/language/2007programs/korean-app.htm.
The following CAORC application link will allow students to be notified directly by CAORC via e-mail when applications become available in December, 2007: http://www.clscholarship.org/onlineapp.php.
Three levels of instruction in the Korean language will be offered:
- Beginning: no prior training or knowledge
- Intermediate: completion of one year of college-level Korean or its equivalent prior to the start of the program
- Advanced: completion of two years of college-level Korean or its equivalent prior to the start of the program
Students will be required to attend all program activities, including classroom instruction and cultural excursions. Classes will be held on the Kyung Hee University campus.
Students will spend eight weeks in intensive language learning, involving four hours per day in class. They will have access to online materials in the Media Center, a taped version of each class accessible through Kyung Hee’s Cyber University, and a language tutor.
Students will continue their language instruction and lectures on Korean history and culture during a week’s study at a site in the countryside and will participate in a variety of cultural enrichment activities.
Students will be housed in a special section of one of Kyung Hee’s dormitories. For trips and excursions outside Seoul, students will be housed at hotels.
2007 Eligibility (subject to change for 2008 programs): All applicants must be U.S. citizens. Applicants must be either currently enrolled in a degree-granting program at the undergraduate or graduate level or have graduated from an undergraduate or graduate program no more than 2 years ago (May 2005). Students in all disciplines including business, engineering, science, the social sciences and humanities are encouraged to apply.
