Bachelor of Fine Arts

Graduates or qualified students currently attending the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts may apply to the College of General Studies and, after completion of 16 liberal arts courses at CGS and completing either 90 Academy semester credits or the full four-year Academy program, receive a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Pennsylvania.

Eligibility

Current students at the Pennsylvania Academy should have completed at least one year of work before applying to CGS. Those who have graduated from the Academy also qualify for the B.F.A.

Degree Requirements

Requirements for the B.F.A. are as follows:

  • From the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, completion of either 90 semester credits or the Academy's full four-year certificate program.
  • From CGS, completion of 16 liberal arts courses at the University of Pennsylvania. Four of these must be History of Art courses. The remaining twelve may be selected from throughout the curriculum. No Penn courses outside the School of Arts and Sciences may be counted toward the B.F.A. (e.g., Education, Wharton, Nursing, or Engineering courses). Fine Arts courses at Penn may not be counted toward a B.F.A. degree. All sixteen liberal arts courses must be taken at Penn. No liberal arts courses taken at another institution prior to or while matriculating at CGS will transfer for credit toward the B.F.A.

Admission

Admission is based upon previous academic preparation; a 3.0 (B) grade point average in past academic work is expected. To apply, students of the Pennsylvania Academy should submit a CGS application and request that official transcripts of all previous work be sent directly to CGS. This should include a high school transcript, transcripts from any college-level institution attended, and both an approval form and a transcript from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Approval forms are available at the Registrar's office at the Academy. Students are admitted to CGS as candidates for a degree and may be eligible for financial aid.
