Survey of commemorative, decorative and panegyric art, from the priod of the soldier emperors to the 6th c. AD. Genres include mosaic, painting, sculpture, relief, sarcophagi, numismatics, and the luxury arts of e.g. metalwork, book illstratiion, figured textiles, carved ivory and gems. Special themes are: commemorative and mythological iconography; retrospective and "medieval" styles; the relationships of "pagan" to "classical" culture in the Christianized Empire.
