Penn History of Art will host this year’s Graduate Student Symposium at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, 16-17 March 2012

 

Speaker: Darcy Grimaldo Grigsby, Professor of the History of Art at the University of California, Berkeley


Prof. Grimaldo Grigsby’s will deliver the keynote address on “Cursed Mimicry: France and Haiti Again.”  Concerns French caricature after France’s second abolition of slavery in 1848 and examines the politics that bound Napoleon III and the newly self-appointed black Emperor of Haiti, Faustin Soulouque.
