ARTH 588 | Winslow Homer

Instructors: Michael Leja and Kathleen Adair Foster

This seminar examining the art of Winslow Homer will coincide with a special exhibition of his work at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, where several of our meetings will take place. The exhibition centers on Homer’s painting The Life Line, a scene of rescue at sea. Like the exhibition this seminar will give special attention to themes of marine painting, shipwrecks, lifesaving technologies, and coastal life, as well as to broader themes bearing on Homer’s work, including issues of interpretation and reception.
