The annual symposium of the Center for Ancient Studies at Penn is organized this year by Profs. Ousterhout, Holod, and Haselberger on the subject of “Masons at Work,” to take place 30 March -1 April 2012.  The symposium assembles specialists from 16 countries to examine building practices in the pre-modern world, with an emphasis on aspects of construction and structure in ancient Greek, Roman, Byzantine, medieval, and early-to-middle period Islamic architecture.

Penn History of Art will host this year’s Graduate Student Symposium at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, 16-17 March 2012.  Prof Darcy Grimaldo Grigsby (UC Berkeley) will deliver the keynote address on “Cursed Mimicry: France and Haiti Again,”at 6:30 pm on Friday 16 March in the Van Pelt Auditorium at the PMA.  Graduate student representatives from regional institutions will speak 10:00-4:30 on Saturday 17 March in the same venue.  History of Art graduate student Ekin Pinar will represent Penn.
