ARTH514 - Topics in East Asian Art: Gardens in China
Section 301 - SEM
This course explores the history of gardens and designed landscapes in China, from early imperial hunting parks to the legacy of such sites in contemporary society. Through texts, paintings, prints and other sources, we will explore such issues as the design and use of garden space, shifting values in land use, gardens as productive, social and political spaces, and the representation of garden landscapes in visual art. Particular attention will be paid to the study of these inherently ephemeral spaces as a historiographic question, including the potential for interdisciplinary and digital methodologies in the study of landscape and art history.
