Dr. Avery is the director of the Master of Medical Physics program and an Assistant Professor of Radiation Oncology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. In this video, Dr. Avery discusses treating cancer using proton therapy and creating a dedicated PET device. He also takes you on a tour of the cyclotron at The Roberts Proton Therapy Center.

"When I first came to Penn as a Philadelphia Academy of the Fine Arts student, I was intimidated. This was an Ivy League school, and as an artist I was not certain how I would fit in. My fears were unfounded. I quickly adapted to the environment. I identified my interests in Penn’s many libraries and museums. I became fascinated by folklore; I took comparative literature and women’s studies courses; I studied French; and then I found myself writing short stories.

It is unclear to me whether my parents even know which University I attended, so I have had to check my agenda when writing this post.

The iPad has changed the way that I work, and it has truly become the computer device that I have always wanted. It is allowing me to be more focused on my work, keep organized, and feed my insatiable need for information, as it has become known my “media diet”. The iPad like all computers is just a highly designed frame and platform, although out of the box it does allow for email, web surfing, and a few other basic tasks what drives the iPad are apps downloaded from the integrated app store.

Here in the recruitment area of LPS, we are tasked with assisting all prospective students who are seeking admission to various programs. It’s unbelievably rewarding work, but given the breadth of programs that we offer through LPS there is rarely a time of year when we’re not working against several admissions deadlines simultaneously. That said, there’s never a dull moment in the daily life of an LPS Recruitment Specialist.

I do respect what Oprah has achieved, but I admit that I am not a fan of her show. I have been laid-up with a pinched nerve, hence the delay in posting a column. I took this opportunity to try, again, to watch an entire program. I failed. In spite of my infrequent viewing, I still catch god-speak peppered throughout her shows.
