College of Liberal and Professional Studies Names New Executive Director

Dr. Dave Bieber has been appointed Executive Director of the College of Liberal and Professional Studies. As Director of LPS Programs in the Natural Sciences for the last four years, he has had responsibility for the Post-Baccalaureate Pre-Health Program as well as four master's degrees, in Environmental Studies, Applied Geosciences, Medical Physics, and Applied Positive Psychology.

Jordan Griska, Bachelor of Fine Arts 2009

What do you do with a decommissioned Cold War Grumman submarine bomber? If you’re sculptor Jordan Griska, you turn it into a piece of art.  A graduate of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts with a certificate in sculpture and the University of Pennsylvania’s Bachelor of Fine Arts program, graduating magna cum laude in 2009, Griska says that his recent work centers on natural disasters and survivalism.

Treating Cancer Using Proton Therapy with Dr. Stephen Avery, University of Pennsylvania

Dr. Avery is the director of the Master of Medical Physics program and an Assistant Professor of Radiation Oncology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. In this video, Dr. Avery discusses treating cancer using proton therapy and creating a dedicated PET device. He also takes you on a tour of the cyclotron at The Roberts Proton Therapy Center.

"When I first came to Penn as a Philadelphia Academy of the Fine Arts student, I was intimidated. This was an Ivy League school, and as an artist I was not certain how I would fit in. My fears were unfounded. I quickly adapted to the environment. I identified my interests in Penn’s many libraries and museums. I became fascinated by folklore; I took comparative literature and women’s studies courses; I studied French; and then I found myself writing short stories.

Gregory Louis Possehl: 1941-2011

Dr. Gregory L. Possehl, professor emeritus of anthropology in the School of Arts and Sciences and curator emeritus of the Asian collections at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, passed away on October 8 at age 70. Dr. Possehl was a leading expert on rise of the Indus civilization in India and Pakistan. His research projects include the exploration of the Ghelo and Kalubhar Valleys in the state of Gujarat and the excavations of the Sorath Harappan sites of Oriyo Timbo, Babar Kot and Rojdi.

A Commuter’s Tale: My Path to a Master of Liberal Arts

In May of 2002, I completed an undergraduate degree in business administration from a small suburban liberal arts college. This was a major accomplishment for me since I was 47, and I had worked many years to complete my degree while holding a full-time job and raising a family. I believed job advancement opportunities would begin to drop into my lap, but as the months passed, I realized that not only would I need an advanced degree to get ahead, I’d need more experience and a broader perspective to be considered seriously for a move into a higher-level position.

Carol Muller, Professor of Music, Will Address Penn LPS Graduating Class

Carol Muller, Ph.D., Professor of Music and Senior Ethnomusicologist in the Graduate Anthropology Group at the University of Pennsylvania, will address graduating students at the College of Liberal and Professional Studies Graduation Ceremony on Sunday, May 15, 2011.

A native of South Africa, Dr. Muller earned her Ph.D. at New York University. She is a highly published scholar and specialist in South African music, critical ethnography, comparative religion, gender studies, diaspora, and historiography.
