Requirements for Biochemistry Major
1. For entrance into the major, the student should have completed, or know
when they will take, Chemistry 101 and 102 (or 15, 16), and 53, 54 (or 51, 52) (General
Chemistry with Laboratory, 3 credits); Physics 150, 151 (or 170, 171) (General
Physics with Laboratory, 3 credits); Mathematics 104 (or 140) and 114 (or 141)
(Calculus, 2 credits). These prerequisites will also fulfill the distributional
requirements in mathematics and natural sciences.
2. All students in the major must complete satisfactorily the following courses:
Chemistry 241 and 242 or 243 (Organic Chemistry, 2 credits); Chemistry 221 (Fall only)
and 222 (Spring only) (Physical Chemistry, 2 credits); either Chemistry 223
or 245 (Organic or Physical Chemistry Laboratory, 1 credit); Chemistry 251,
451 (Fall only) and 452 (Spring only) (Biochemistry/Biophysics/and Gene Expression,
3 credits); and Biochemistry 404* (Research in Selected Faculty Laboratories,
2 credits).
*3. Laboratory research, Biochemistry 404 (2 semesters; Fall-Spring sequence
only; prerequisite Chemistry 245, co-requisite Chemistry 451 and 452) requires
advanced planning. Many students find a faculty supervisor in their Sophomore
year and take several units of Biochemistry 299. Students should make definite
laboratory commitments, with approval of the major chair, during the Spring
term prior to the academic year they intend to register for BCHE 404 credit.
4. The major chairman should be consulted regarding acceptable independent study
projects for Biochemistry 299, 300. No more than 2 c.u. of independent study
may be taken in one semester. Normally, independent study should be in addition
to 4 c.u. of lecture and laboratory course work in any semester. Students wishing
to take a total of more than 4 c.u. of independent study toward their B.A. degrees
should consult with the undergraduate major chairman.
5. Recommended electives include: Mathematics 240 and 241; Physics 230, 240,
280, 361, and 362; Chemistry 261, 441, 443, 555, 556, and 557; Biology 202,
221, 255, 275, 354, 421, 425, 475, 480, 483, 536, and 540.
6. Students in this major may count any 200 level Biology course for sector 5, "Living World".
7. Students are expected to abide by the policies and procedures of the College of Arts and Sciences. Class of 2015 Policies and Procedures can be found here.
