Programs for International Students
Dual Degree Program (BS/BA + MS/MA)
Master of Medical Physics
Program Profile: The Master of Medical Physics (MMP) Program meets the academic and career interests of technically prepared college graduates who seek to combine their interests in graduate physics with career opportunities in the medical research and clinical fields. The MMP Program provides students with rigorous graduate physics training in essential physics and laboratory techniques, as well as in traditional subjects in medicine and biology. In conjunction with the Departments of Radiology and Radiation Oncology in the School of Medicine, the MMP Program trains students in the essentials needed for a physicist to pursue a medical career along side physicians and other scientists. Select students who complete the MMP degree will have the opportunity to work for up to two years in the University of Pennsylvania Health System in preparation for certification by the American Board of Radiology.
Student Profile: Students in this program have strong academic credentials and hold an undergraduate degree in physics, or a degree in chemistry, mathematics, or related subject with a strong physics orientation. Applicants should have successfully completed coursework in electromagnetism and mechanics and have taken more than four semesters of college-level calculus.
Curriculum: Students complete fifteen required course units which include eight core courses, a seminar series and five electives. Core courses include topics such as Quantum Mechanics, Electromagnetic Theory, Mathematics for Medical Imaging, and Medical Radiation Engineering. Electives cover a variety of physics and non-physics topics such as Topics in Biological Physics, Gross Human Anatomy, and Independent Study: Medical Concentration and Practical Training, where students receive exposure to the clinical setting and advanced medical technology in use in the hospital. During the first year, students attend a non-credit seminar series called Introduction to Medical Physics, which is clinically oriented and surveys the Imaging Areas and Radiation Oncology.
Program Length: Five semesters of full-time study.
