Master of Science in Applied Geosciences
Program Profile: The Master of Science in Applied Geosciences Program provides students with an academic foundation for licensure in critical fields addressing environmental problems including geochemistry, geophysics, hydrogeology and engineering geology. Working closely with faculty and advisors, students choose from many classes in several schools and departments of the University of Pennsylvania to build a program that matches their own unique goals.
Student Profile: The typical student in the Masters of Science in Applied Geosciences Program is a practicing professional with an undergraduate degree in geology, engineering, architecture, or the equivalent. Many are established geotechnical or environmental practitioners who seek the career advancement a graduate degree can offer.
Curriculum: Students complete twelve required course units which include foundation courses, electives in a chosen area of concentration. Foundation courses include topics such as Introduction to Geophysics, Geomechanics, Geocomputations, Geochemistry, Engineering Geology and Hydrology. Areas of concentration include Engineering Geology, Hydrogeology and Environmental Geology. Field trips and site visits are incorporated within the curriculum. To earn the degree, students also complete an independent research Capstone project with a faculty advisor. The Capstone is an independent, one-semester research exercise that demonstrates the student's mastery of his chosen field.
Program Length: One to two years of full-time study.
