Linking to a Video on Penn+Box

  • Faculty & Staff
  • Students & Alumni

It's possible to use Penn+Box to post a video file and then link to it or embed it in a web page (for example, in Canvas). Here are instructions.

Prerequisite: a Penn+Box account

As a prerequisite, you must have a Penn+Box account. First-time users should visit the Get Started guide.

1. Upload the Video

Log into your Penn+Box account.

Optionally, find or create a folder in which to place your video.

Upload the video into Penn+Box.

2. Share the Video

To give permission for people to see the video, click on the "Share" link next to your file.

You can give permission to specific Penn+Box users — or you can give permission to "Anyone with the link".

3. Copy the Link

Copy the Link (web address) that Penn+Box provides. In the example above, the Link is highlighted in blue.

4. Link the Video

Go to the web page where you wish to create a link to your video; for example, a discussion or page in Canvas.

Create the link. In Canvas you can do this by clicking the link icon (circled below).

5. Optionally, embed the Video

If you want to embed the video in Canvas, a few more steps are involved.

In Penn+Box, click on the "Share" link and then on the settings gear icon. A little window will pop up. Click on the "Embed" tab and then copy the Embed Code.

In Canvas, click on the link to the HTML Editor. Then paste the Embed Code into the text blank. You can now return to the Rich Text Editor for any additional editing. The embedded video will be represented by a placeholder. When you click the "Done" button, you should see the embedded video.

Here's a video screencast (on Penn+Box) to describe the process.
