Configuring Apple Mail for Mac OS X 10.2 and 10.3
for Access to Mail.sas Off Campus


Steps to take before proceeding:

Apple Mail is not officially supported or recommended, but the following directions should allow you to configure it to access mail.sas. Please click the appropriate link below for your client and operating system.

Apple Mail 1.3.x or higher on Mac OS X 10.3 or higher

Apple Mail 1.2.x on Mac OS X 10.2


Apple Mail 1.3.x+ on Mac OS X 10.3+

  1. Launch Apple Mail.
  2. Click on the Mail menu and choose Preferences.
  3. In the Preferences menu, the General category will likely already be selected. If not, select it.
  4. If you want Apple Mail to be your default email reader, then choose it.
  5. Change the Check for new mail setting to Every 15 minutes.
  6. Click on the Accounts category, and select the Account Information tab.
  7. For Description and for Email Address, enter you email address for mail.sas in the form of username@sas.upenn.edu.
  8. Enter your full name in the Full Name field.
  9. If you use POP, enter pop.sas.upenn.edu in the Incoming Mail Server field.
  10. If you use IMAP, enter imap.sas.upenn.edu in the Incoming Mail Server field.
  11. Enter your mail.sas username in the User Name field.
  12. Enter your ISP's SMTP server information.
  13. Click on the Advanced tab.
    1. If you are using IMAP for the first time, then enter ~/Mail/ in the IMAP Path Prefix field.
    2. Select Use SSL. Note that the port number will show 993 for IMAP and 995 for POP.
  14. Save your settings.
  15. Close and relaunch Apple Mail to ensure that settings take effect.
  16. Send yourself a test message and ensure that you can send and receive mail.

Apple Mail 1.2.x on Mac OS X 10.2

  1. Launch Apple Mail.
  2. Click on the Mail menu and choose Preferences.
  3. Click Add Account.
  4. For Account Type, select POP or IMAP.
  5. For Description and for Email Address, enter your email address for mail.sas in the form of username@sas.upenn.edu.
  6. Enter your full name in the Full Name field.
  7. If you use POP, enter pop.sas.upenn.edu in the Incoming Mail Server field.
  8. If you use IMAP, enter imap.sas.upenn.edu in the Incoming Mail Server to field.
  9. Enter your mail.sas username in the User Name field.
  10. Enter your ISP's SMTP server. If you do not know your ISP's SMTP server name, you will need to contact them for details.
  11. Click on the Advanced tab.
    1. If you are using IMAP for the first time, then enter ~/Mail/ in the IMAP Path Prefix field.
    2. Select Use SSL. Note that the port number will show 993 for IMAP and 995 for POP.
  12. Save your settings.
  13. Close and relaunch Apple Mail to ensure that settings take effect.
  14. Make sure you can successfully receive and send email by sending yourself a test message and then checking for new mail.
