How can I connect to mail.sas via telnet or ssh (secure shell)?

Note: You must have a Shell account to connect to mail.sas via telnet of ssh. If you do not have a Shell account, see http://www.sas.upenn.edu/computing/help/Server/shell_acct .html for instructions on how to enable your Shell account.

There are a numbers of methods you can use to connect to mail.sas.upenn.edu via telnet or ssh.

To connect to mail.sas via telnet or ssh, you need to use one of the currently supported Terminal Emulation programs available from Information System and Computing's (ISC) Download Site and the PennConnect CD such as the current versions of Secure CRT or HostExplorer for Windows, or dataComet Secure for the Mac OS.

When the installers provided by ISC are used, the programs are preconfigured with profiles which can be used to securely access mail.sas using SSH or Kerberos authentication. If you have your own profiles defined, ensure they are using ssh2 or kerberos authentication.

Connecting using SSH

To use ssh (supported by current versions of dataComet Secure for the Mac and SecureCRT for Windows), you only need to download and install the program and use a preconfigured profile to connect securely to mail.sas using the ssh2 protocol.

Connecting using a Kerberized telnet client

You can use a kerberized telnet client to connect to mail.sas. To use kerberos authentication, you first need to :

  1. Obtain your PennKey and PennKey password.
  2. Obtain and install the kerberos ticket manager software (Kerberos for Macintosh 4.x, or Leash32 2.x for Windows).
  3. Possibly obtain time synchronization software, from ISC's download site or the PennConnect CD.
Once configured to use a Ticket Manager, you will be able to configure dataComet Secure for the Mac or HostExplorer for Windows to connect to mail.sas using kerberized telnet.

ISC provides good instructions on configuring the supported Mac OS and Windows clients for kerberos authentication at the site from which they can be downloaded. Their examples show profiles being configured for pobox.upenn.edu, but you can just substitute mail.sas.upenn.edu for pobox.upenn.edu in most cases. When using HostExplorer with kerberos for mail.sas, you will have to specify the hostname as either mail1.sas.upenn.edu or mail2.sas.upenn.edu, due to a bug in HostExplorer.

Answers to Common Questions

How do I know if I use telnet?

If you are uncertain as to whether you use telnet, please read this page.

What are some options when I can't connect via a supported telnet/ssh2 client?

If you are unable to use a kerberized telnet client or an ssh2 client (e.g. when traveling), you have several options:

  • use your browser to access your mail via webmail.sas
  • temporarily forward your mail.sas mail to another account - see the mail.sas account configuration page
  • access another unix based account and use ssh2 to connect to mail.sas
