Configuring Entourage 10.1.4 or higher and
Outlook Express 5.0.6 for the Mac
for Access to Mail.SAS On Campus

Neither Entourage nor Outlook Express are officially supported or recommended, but the following directions should allow you to configure these clients to use SSL to access mail.sas.

  1. Launch Entourage or Outlook Express.
  2. Click on the Tools menu and select Accounts.
  3. If a Setup Assistant window pops up, click Configure Account Manually and click the right arrow.
  4. Choose IMAP or POP.
  5. In the Account name field, enter mail.sas.
  6. In the Name field under Personal Information, enter your full name.
  7. In the Email address field, enter your e-mail address for mail.sas (in the form of username@sas.upenn.edu).
  8. In the Account ID field under Receiving mail enter your mail.sas username.
  9. If you are using IMAP, enter imap.sas.upenn.edu in the IMAP server field.
  10. If you are using POP, enter pop.sas.upenn.edu in the POP server field.
  11. Click on Click here for advanced receiving options and click on Service requires a secure connection (SSL). Note that port number will show 995 if you use POP and 993 if you use IMAP.
  12. In the Sending Mail section, enter smtp.sas.upenn.edu in the SMTP server field. Click the button that says "Click here for advanced sending options" and check the box for "SMTP service requires a secure connection (SSL)", and for "SMTP server requires authentication" and "Use same settings as receiving mail server."
  13. If you are using IMAP for the first time, click on the Options tab and enter ~/Mail/ in the Root folder field.
  14. Save your settings.
  15. Close and relaunch Entourage or Outlook Express to ensure that settings take effect.
  16. Make sure you can successfully receive and send email by sending yourself a test message and then checking for new mail.

Notes on Entourage Version

If you have Macintosh OS X 10.x and Office X but do not have Entourage 10.1.4 or later, then apply all the Macintosh OS updates and Entourage should get updated to the most recent version.
