Configuring Eudora 5.2.1 and above for Macintosh for
Access to Mail.SAS On-Campus
Steps to take before proceeding:
Protecting Your Password
When using Eudora 5.2.1 or higher for Mac OS 9.x or above with mail.sas, you can use the SSL protocol to ensure that your password is not sent over the network in clear (unencrypted) text. More information about these security protocols is available here.
In order to use SSL on Mac 0S 9.x, you will need to set up the Keychain Access Control Panel first. For instructions on doing so, please see here. (On Mac OS X 10.x, each user's keychain should automatically be created when the user is created.)
For Directions on Configuring Eudora, please click on the appropriate
link below:
Eudora for Macintosh using SSL
- Launch Eudora.
- Select "Settings" from the Special dropdown menu. The Settings
menu appears.
- Scroll down and Click the Getting Started icon to display the settings
for this option.
- In the Checking mail section: Ensure your username for mail.sas is entered
correctly.
- If you use POP, set Mail Server in Checking Mail section to pop.sas.upenn.edu.
- If you use IMAP, set Mail Server in Checking Mail section to imap.sas.upenn.edu.
- In the Sending Mail section, enter your first and last names in the Real
Name section.
- Enter smtp.sas.upenn.edu as the SMTP server.
- Enter your return address in the form of your_username@sas.upenn.edu (using
your actual username, of course).
- Go to the Checking Mail category and select either the IMAP (recommended)
or POP protocol..
- If configuring IMAP for the first time, ensure that "~/Mail/"
(no quotes) is entered in the IMAP Mailbox Location Prefix setting.
- Go to the SSL category and select the Personality you use with mail.sas.
If only one personality (likely named "Dominant") is present, select
it.
- Set SSL for POP and IMAP to "Required. Alternate Port."
- Set SSL for SMTP
to "Optional (TLS) ". If there is a choice for the type of Standard
Port Configuration, make sure it is set to "TLS 1.0 (Cyrus)".
- Turn on SMTP authentication. Go
to the Personalities category and select the Personality you use with
mail.sas. If only one personality (likely named "Dominant")
is present, select it. In the Sending Mail section, ensure that Allow
Authorization is checked.
- Save your settings.
- Close and relaunch Eudora to ensure that settings take effect.
- Try to send yourself a test message and you will be be prompted to accept
mail.sas's SMTP certificate. Accept the certificate. Then, when you try again,
the message should go through. You will have to go through the same steps
for receiving messages. (For more information on this, see Eudora for Macintosh - SSL Certificates.)
- If you have problems, please contact your support provider: Find out who
this is here.
Penn Online Directory using Eudora
- Select "Settings..." from the Special menu.
- In the left pane, click the Hosts icon.
- Type the following in the "Ph/LDAP Server:" field exactly as shown: ldap://directory.upenn.edu/dc=upenn,dc=edu?displayname,status,sn,givenname,mail
Note: there are no space characters in the text; some text will disappear as you near the end of the field -- this is normal.
- (Optional) Click the "Live" directory service queries checkbox.
- Click OK.
- To test the configuration, select Directory Services from the Window menu.
- Type your last name in the Enter Query field.
- Click Lookup. If the query is successful, you have configured the Penn Directory properly.
