Configuring Eudora 5.2.1 or above for Windows for
Access to Mail.SAS Off-Campus
Step to take before proceeding:
- Decide to use either the IMAP (recommended)
or the POP protocol for checking mail
- Select your SMTP server - see the information here
- Choose a protocol to secure your password.
- To use the SSL protocol, you will need to ensure that your antivirus
program is not set up to scan incoming or outgoing email messages for viruses.
If you have Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition (SAV 9.x), please see here
for instructions on ensuring the scanning is disabled.
- Faculty & Staff: If you use the facstaff.sas email server, please see this page for more information: Email Client Configuration for Facstaff Server
Choosing How to Protect Your Password
You may use the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocol to ensure that your password is not sent over the network in clear (unencrypted)
text. To use SSL, you will need to ensure that your antivirus program is not
set up to scan incoming or outgoing email messages for viruses. If you have
Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition (SAV 9.x), please see here
for instructions on disabling the scanning.

link below:
Eudora for Windows Using SSL
- Launch Eudora.
- Select Options from the Tools drop down menu.
- Click the Getting Started icon to display the settings for this option.
- Enter your full name in the Real Name field and your return address (e.g.
username@sas.upenn.edu) in the Return address field.
- If you use POP, set Mail Server (Incoming) to pop.sas.upenn.edu.
- If you use IMAP, set Mail Server (Incoming) to imap.sas.upenn.edu.
- Enter your mail.sas username in the Login Name field.
- Enter your ISP's SMTP server in the SMTP server field.
- You will need to contact your ISP to find out if you need SMTP authentication on; if so, check
the "Allow
Authentication" option.
- If your ISP requires SSL, go to the Checking Mail category and set Secure Sockets When Receiving to "Required, STARTTLS". If you have problems receiving mail with that
setting, you can try setting Secure Sockets When Receiving to "Required, Alternate
Port", as this works better in some situations.
- Deselect "Save password".
- Go to the Incoming Mail category and select the IMAP (recommended) or POP
protocol.
- If configuring IMAP for the first time, ensure that "~/Mail/"
(no quotes) is entered in the IMAP Mailbox Location Prefix setting.
- In the Authentication style section, make sure "Passwords" is selected.
- If using POP, then go to the Advanced Network settings category and set
the Network Buffer Size value to 150000 or higher. If you don't do this, you
will have problems downloading attachments.
- Choose OK to save your settings.
- Close and relaunch Eudora to make sure the settings take effect.
- Send yourself a test message and ensure that you can send and receive mail.
- If you have problems, contact your support provider: Find out who this is
here.
Penn Online Directory Using Eudora
- Select "Directory Services" from the Tools menu.
- In the "Protocols" section to the right, select "LDAP".
- Select "New Database...". The "Modify Database" window will open - make sure the Network tab is selected.
- Type Penn Online Directory in the "Type the name by which you would like to refer this server" field.
- Type directory.upenn.edu in the "Host Name:" field.
- Retain 389 as the default in the "Port:" field.
- Select the Search Options tab.
- Type ou=People, dc=upenn, dc=edu in the "Search Base:" field, making sure that the "P" in PennPeople is capitalized.
- Do not change the entries in the "Word-wise Search Filter:" field.
- Click "OK".
- Ensure that the Penn Directory using the LDAP protocol is checked off in the Databases section. Uncheck any configured servers using the PH protocol.
- Do a test query by typing your last name in the Query field in the upper left hand corner. Click Start. If the query is successful, you have successfully configured the Penn Directory.
