Configuring Netscape Messenger, Mozilla, and Thunderbird
for Access to Mail.sas from off Campus

These directions are for MOS 10.x, Windows 2000, and Windows XP with all three email clients, and for MOS 9.x with Netscape Messenger 7.0 only. There are no MOS 9.x clients for Netscape 7.2, Mozilla, or Thunderbird.

Steps to take before proceeding:

  • Decide to use either the IMAP (recommended) or the POP protocol for checking mail.
  • Find your SMTP server - see the information here
  • You will need to ensure that your antivirus program is not set up to scan incoming or outgoing email messages for viruses. If you have Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition (SAV 9.x), please see here for instructions on disabling the scanning.

Adding your account:

  1. For Netscape and Mozilla, make sure you have the Mail and Newsgroups window open. (If you do not, Click Windows in the browser menu and select Mail and Newsgroups.)
  2. If the Account Wizard - New Account Setup window automatically pops open, click Cancel.
  3. If prompted with: Are you sure you want to exit the Account wizard? Press the Enter/Return key.
  4. Where to find Add Account:
    1. For Netscape and Mozilla, click on Edit, select Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings, and click on Add Account.
    2. For Thunderbird, click on Tools, select Account Settings, and click on Add Account.
  5. Make sure Email account is selected and press the Enter/Return key.
  6. Type in your first name and last name in the Your Name field.
  7. Type in your email address in the form of username@sas.upenn.edu in the Email Address field and press the Enter/Return key.
  8. Select POP or IMAP.
  9. For the incoming server, enter:
    1. For IMAP use imap.sas.upenn.edu.
    2. For POP use pop.sas.upenn.edu.
  10. For the outgoing server, enter your Internet Service Provider's (ISP's) SMTP server name. You may need to contact your ISP for this information.
  11. Press the Enter/Return key.
  12. Ensure that your mail.sas username is entered correctly in the Incoming User Name field.
  13. If necessary, enter your username for your ISP in the Outgoing User Name field and press the Enter/Return key.
  14. On the Account Name page, press the Enter/Return key.
  15. On the Congratulations page, press the Enter/Return key.
  16. If you are prompted to enter your password to access your email account, click Cancel.

Configuring your account:

  1. Make sure the the Mail and Newsgroups Account Settings window is open
  2. If it is not open, then for Netscape Messenger and Mozilla, click on Edit, and select Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings. For Thunderbird, click on Tools and select Account Settings.
  3. Select Server Settings in the left pane under your username@sas.upenn.edu account (where username is your mail.sas username.)
  4. Click in the box next to Use secure connection (SSL). (The port number listed next to the incoming server name will change.)
  5. Do not check the box next to: Use Secure Authentication.
  6. For IMAP users: click on the Advanced tab.
  7. If you are configuring Messenger for the first time, then type in ~/Mail/ for the IMAP server directory.
  8. Uncheck the box next to: Server supports folders that contain sub-folders and messages.
  9. Click OK.
  10. Click on Outgoing Server (SMTP) near the bottom of the list of settings in the left pane
  11. Make sure your ISP's SMTP server name is entered in the Server Name field. You may need to contact your ISP for this information.
  12. If your ISP's SMTP server requires authentication, you will need to turn SMTP Authentication on.
    1. Make sure the box next to Use name and password is checked.
    2. Make sure your username for your ISP is entered in the User Name field.
  13. In most cases, your ISP will require that you select Never for the Use secure connection (SSL) option.
  14. Click OK.
Testing your account configuration:

  1. Make sure you can successfully receive and send email by sending yourself a test message and then checking for new mail.
