Configuring Outlook
for Windows for Access to Mail.sas from On Campus

Steps to take before proceeding:

  • Decide to use either the IMAP (recommended) or the POP protocol for checking mail
  • You will need to ensure that your antivirus program is not set up to scan incoming or outgoing email messages for viruses. If you have Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition (SAV 9.x), please see here for instructions on disabling the scanning.

Outlook 2002 (XP) and 2003

Outlook 2000, and Outlook Express 5.x/6.x


Outlook 2002 (XP) and 2003

To configure Outlook 2002 and 2003 (which shall be referred to in this document as simply, "Outlook") for Windows, follow the steps below.

  1. Launch Outlook.
  2. Select Email Accounts from the Tools drop down menu. (If you do not see Email Accounts, then click on the arrows at the end of the Tools menu to extend the list.)
  3. Click Add a New Email Account and then click Next.
  4. Select POP3 or IMAP and then click Next.
  5. Enter your full name in the Your Name field and enter you email address (e.g. username@sas.upenn.edu) in the Email Address field.
  6. If you use POP, set Incoming Mail Server to pop.sas.upenn.edu.
  7. If you use IMAP, set Incoming Mail Server to imap.sas.upenn.edu.
  8. Enter your mail.sas username in User Name field in the Logon Information section.
  9. Uncheck the box labeled Remember password.
  10. Ensure that the box labeled Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) is not checked.
  11. Enter smtp.sas.upenn.edu as the SMTP server.
  12. Click on More Settings.
  13. Click on the Outgoing Server tab.
  14. Turn SMTP Authentication on. Make sure that "My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication" is checked. Then select "Use same settings as my incoming mail server."
  15. Make sure that the box labeled Secure Password Authentication is not checked.
  16. Click on the Advanced tab.
  17. Under Incoming mail (IMAP) or (POP), ensure the box beside, "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)" is checked. Note that the port number used will change automatically (to 993 for IMAP, to 995 for POP).
  18. Ensure the box beside, "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)" is checked under Outgoing mail (SMTP).
  19. When configuring for the first time, if using IMAP, ensure that "~/Mail/" (no quotes) is entered in the Root folder path field. Without this, Outlook will not store folders where other IMAP clients expect to find them.
  20. Click OK to save your settings.
  21. Click Next.
  22. Click Finish.
  23. Close and relaunch Outlook. Some settings will not take effect unless you do so.


Outlook 2000, and Outlook Express 5.x/6.x



To configure Outlook 2000 and Outlook Express 5.x/6.x (all of which shall be referred to in this document as simply, "Outlook") for Windows, follow the steps below.

  1. Launch Outlook
  2. Select Accounts from the Tools drop down menu.
  3. Click the Mail tab, click Add and select Mail.
  4. Enter your full name in the Display name field.
  5. Enter your email address (e.g. username@sas.upenn.edu) in the Email address field and click Next.
  6. If you use POP, leave the server type as POP3 and set Incoming Mail Server to pop.sas.upenn.edu.
  7. If you want to use IMAP, choose IMAP as the server type and set Incoming Mail Server to imap.sas.upenn.edu.
  8. Enter smtp.sas.upenn.edu as the SMTP server.
  9. Click Next.
  10. Ensure that your mail.sas username is entered in the Account Name field.
  11. Uncheck Remember password.
  12. Ensure that the box labeled Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) is not checked and click Next and then Finish.
  13. Click on your account on the Mail tab to select it and click Properties.
  14. Click on the Servers tab and ensure that the box labeled Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) is not checked.
  15. Turn SMTP authentication on. Check the box labeled "My server requires authentication."
  16. Click Settings and select "Use same settings as my incoming mail server."
  17. Click OK.
  18. Click on the Advanced tab.
  19. Check the box beside, "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)" under Outgoing mail (SMTP).
  20. Under Incoming mail (IMAP) or (POP), check the box beside, "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)". Note that the port number used will change automatically (to 993 for IMAP, to 995 for POP).
  21. Click Apply
  22. When configuring for the first time, if using IMAP, click on the IMAP tab
    1. Ensure that "~/Mail/" (no quotes) is entered in the Root folder path field. Without this, Outlook will not store folders where other IMAP clients expect to find them.
    2. You may want to change the Sent Items path setting on the IMAP tab from "Sent Items" to "Sent" (no quotes), or similar, to avoid problems with other clients which do not work well with spaces in folder names.
  23. Click OK to save your settings.
  24. Click Close to close the account configuration dialog box.
  25. Close and relaunch Outlook. Some settings will not take effect unless you do so.


Testing your account configuration:

  1. Make sure you can successfully receive and send email by sending yourself a test message and then checking for new mail.
