What do I do when I am over the inbox quota on my mail.sas account?
When you have received a message saying that you have gone over your inbox quota, these instructions can help you clean out your inbox quota and avoid getting the message again in the future.
NOTE: The inbox referred to is a place on the mail server computer, not the IN mailbox in Eudora or Netscape.
The most likely causes of having your inbox too large are:
- You are simply storing too many messages in your inbox on MAIL.SAS
and need to delete some of them or move them to other folders.
- You have your POP email client (e.g., Netscape Messenger or Eudora)
set to "Leave a copy on the server" when downloading (checking) your
mail. This is not recommended for most users, and leads to your mail.sas
inbox eventually overflowing. Read how to solve
the "Leave a copy on server" Problem
- You have received one or more messages with a very large attachment
(pictures, greeting cards, programs, etc.) that quickly fill up your
inbox on mail.sas. This can happen to any email user, whether using
Netscape, Eudora, elm, or pine. Read how to solve the "Large Attachment" Problem
Solutions
| "Leave a copy on server" Problem |
| The solution to this problem is to change the settings in your
POP email client to not leave copies of your email on the server (in
the inbox). Here are the directions to do this:
- On a Macintosh using Eudora, go to the Special menu and pick
Settings. Then choose the Checking Mail category. There will be
a box that says "Leave mail on server." Uncheck that box.
- In Windows using Eudora, go to the Tools menu and pick Options.
Then choose the Checking Mail category. There will be a box that
says "Leave mail on server." Uncheck that box.
- On a Macintosh or Windows using Netscape, go to the Edit menu
and pick Preferences. Then choose the Mail & Newsgroups category,
and the Mail Servers sub-category. Double-click on the Incoming
Mail Server (it should say pop.sas.upenn.edu). Click on the tab
that says POP, and uncheck the box that says "Leave messages on
server." Click OK, then click OK in the Preferences window.
Once you've taken the appropriate steps shown above, Netscape
and Eudora should no longer leave copies of all of your email on
the server. However, you will still need to remove the messages
already stored in the inbox. First, check your email again using
Netscape or Eudora to get any fresh messages. Then delete messages
in your inbox in elm or Webmail.
To delete messages in webmail:
(You can only do this for one page of messages at a time.)
- Go to https://webmail.sas.upenn.edu.
- Select the messages you want to delete by clicking the box to
the left of each message.
- Click delete.
- Click purge.
- When you are finished deleting and expunging all the messages
you need to, click on Logout.

| Large Attachment problem |
If you have downloaded the message that has the large attachment, then you shouldn't get the "inbox-quota" warning again, unless you also have "Leave mail on server" turned on. If this is the case, see the above solution.
You may also want to suggest to your friends and colleagues not
to send attachments that are larger than 1 MB, as it could cause
annoyances like this for you in the future.
