Fixing an Inbox Quota Problem on Mail.SAS
I am approaching my inbox quota. What does that mean?
Your inbox quota is the amount of space you are allowed to use for mail in your mail.sas inbox folder. This folder is used
by the system for delivering incoming mail, and without free space there, new mail cannot be delivered and is bounced back
to its sender. Your inbox has a limit of 25 megabytes (MB).
When your inbox usage reaches/exceeds 18MB, you will receive daily warning messages from the system alerting you to the fact that
you might not be receiving all your mail, as large messages will not be able to fit in your inbox. When your inbox usage reaches/exceeds
20MB, a program that runs automatically on mail.sas to check for overloaded inboxes will take a chunk of your oldest inbox email
and move it to a new folder in your home directory, mbox-Mon-dd-yy (e.g. mbox-Dec-20-05). This will ensure that you can
receive your incoming mail, but can cause disk quota problems.
I'm not receiving any mail, not even the automatic warning ones. I sent myself a test message and never got it. Why?
If all mail receipt has stopped, you have reached your 25MB limit, and nothing more can fit. Students using Mail.SAS should fill out our student
email help form; faculty and staff should contact their local support provider (LSP).
Why can't I delete large messages/anything?
The system needs space for temp files in order to complete message deletion, and if you do not have sufficient space, deletion
will be impossible. Students using Mail.SAS should fill out our student
email help form; faculty and staff should contact their local support provider (LSP).
What do I do to fix it?
- If you are using 18-20MB of space in your inbox, you can rectify this by deleting messages. Remember that it does not matter
how many messages you have, it only matters how much cumulative space they take up; therefore, focus on emails with large attachments
when you are cleaning things out.
- If you are not receiving any mail and cannot delete anything from your inbox, students using Mail.SAS should fill out our student
email help form; faculty and staff should contact their local support provider (LSP).
Note that you can monitor change in usage (overall and folder-by-folder) at the
Account Configuration page.
How do I access the mail that the system moved?
MBOXes can be accessed the same way any folder in your home directory is accessed: log in to Webmail
and select the folder from the Folder dropdown menu in the upper right corner. To access an MBOX folder via
another email client, simply subscribe to the MBOX folder in that client.
When I go into the folder there's only one message, and the subject line ends in ".gz" or ".z". What's going on?
To save space in your home directory, the system supports file compression for mail folders in your home directory. You will need to
decompress the folder before you can access its contents. If the decompression fails, you may not have
sufficient free space for the decompressed folder. You can either delete mail from other folders in your home directory to free up more
space, or request a temporary increase. To request a temporary increase, students using Mail.SAS should fill out our student
email help form; faculty and staff should contact their local support provider (LSP).
