When will the CCAT server be retired?
User accounts will be closed and some services discontinued starting on June 16, 2009. See a detailed timeline for migration of email and web services.
Will I still be able to receive email sent to my @ccat address?
Yes, all mail sent to your @ccat address will continue to be delivered. See the following questions for details. This includes all of the domains hosted on CCAT, including:
classics.upenn.edu
corinth.sas.upenn.edu
dept.arthistory.upenn.edu
humanities.sas.upenn.edu
mec.sas.upenn.edu
phil.upenn.edu
philae.sas.upenn.edu
southasiacenter.upenn.edu
What if I'm already forwarding mail sent to my @ccat account to my @sas account?
If you're already forwarding mail from your @ccat account to your @sas account, you don't need to do anything; your mail will continue to forward after the server is retired.
If you would like to save any of the mail or other data in your CCAT account, we will provide an archive of your account for download after your account is closed. Or, you can ask your department's local support provider (LSP) for assistance anytime with this process.
What if I'm forwarding mail sent to my @ccat account to another account (e.g. Gmail)?
If you're already forwarding mail from your @ccat account to another account (e.g. GMail), you don't need to do anything; your mail will continue to forward after the server is retired.
If you would like to save any of the mail or other data in your CCAT account, we will provide an archive of your account for download after your account is closed. Or, you can ask your department's local support provider (LSP) for assistance anytime with this process.
What if I read my email on CCAT (i.e. I'm not forwarding to another account)?
If you already have a facstaff email account, your @ccat mail will be forwarded to your SAS address.
If you don't already have a facstaff account, we'll create one for you and forward your CCAT mail there. After we create your new account, you'll just need to reset the password so that you can log in.
You can get information about how to check your email on facstaff and other frequently asked questions about facstaff at our FAQ.
If you use a mail client (e.g. Thunderbird) or mobile device (e.g. Blackberry) to read your CCAT email, you will have to reconfigure it to use the facstaff.sas email server. Please contact your department's local support provider (LSP) if you need assistance with this procedure.
Once your CCAT account has been closed, an archive of your account will be available for download.
Can I use Elm on facstaff?
Elm is not available on facstaff, but a very similar program, Mutt, is available. You can use Mutt by logging into your shell account on web-facstaff and typing "mutt" at the command line.
What will happen to my mail, homepage and other files stored in my CCAT account?
If you had a web homepage on your CCAT account, that will be transferred to your account on the web-facstaff server. The same URL of http://ccat.sas.upenn.edu/~(username) will still work. More information on this process and how to access your site once it is migrated is available here.
Shortly after your CCAT account is closed on June 16, we will create an archive file which contains the full contents of your CCAT account. This archive file will be available for download at:
http://www.sas.upenn.edu/archive/pennkey
where "pennkey" is your PennKey username.
What about my mailing lists on CCAT?
We are replacing mailing lists on CCAT with new mailing lists using mailman software and running on the new groups.sas.upenn.edu server. Administering mailman lists is done through a web interface and is much easier than administering the lists on ccat. Jay Treat is in the process of transferring lists from CCAT to Groups.sas. To request that a mailing list be moved to groups.sas, please contact Jay Treat.
You should be aware of two requirements for lists on groups.sas. The first is that administration requires PennKey authentication. So, the list-administrator (the person responsible for maintaining the subscriber list or moderating messages) needs to have a valid PennKey. Subscribers do not need PennKeys. The second is that list names must begin with the name (or abbreviation) of a department or program or other unit, followed by a hyphen; for example, hssc-staff.
List-owners on ccat can choose whether or not they wish their current list addresses to forward to the new list.
How can I get more information or help with this process?
If you have questions about this process or need help with anything, please contact your department's local support provider (LSP).
