Using a personal GMail account for your SAS Email

If you are not using Google@SAS but instead forwarding your SAS email to a personal GMail account (e.g.  ben.franklin@gmail.com), there are a few things you can do to improve your experience.

Configure your personal GMail account to send messages with your SAS email address as "from" and "reply-to"

Sending mail as being "from" your SAS address has several advantages:

  • You can only write to many of Penn's mailing lists (including your class lists) if it is from the address you have registered in Penn's online directory. In most cases, this is your SAS email address.
  • It is easier for teachers, advisors and other University contacts to identify you as a SAS student when you send them mail
  • Your school address may look more official when writing to potential employers.

Instructions for adding your SAS address as a "from" address to your GMail account are located here. Once you complete this process, you will be able to send mail as either your SAS address or your GMail address. You may want to set your account to send from your SAS address by default. We highly recommend that you click the button for, "Reply from the same address the message was sent to."

You can find additional instructions for setting your reply-to address here.

Using both a Google@SAS account and a personal GMail account

Many students may have both a Google@SAS account and a personal GMail account.  You can can only have your SAS mail delivered to one account, but you can be simultaneously signed in to both a Google@SAS account and personal Google account, then easily switch between the two accounts.  See Google documentation on Using Multiple Accounts for details
