Fixing a Quota Problem on Mail.SAS
- I have received a message saying that I am over quota. What does this mean?
The mail.sas system has two quotas: an inbox quota and a disk quota. The inbox quota consists of all messages in your inbox and can only hold 25mb. The disk quota consists of all files not in your inbox (e.g. trash folders, sent folders, compressed files, etc.) and can only hold 40mb.
Once you reach your inbox quota, you will no longer be able to receive or delete mail until you remedy the situation.
If your account nears quota, you will begin to receive quota warnings. You can remedy this by deleting files or messages in the appropriate folders (inbox for inbox quota, and other folders for disk quota).
- I am over quota, but cannot delete mail to free up quota space. What do I do?
Once you reach your quota, you no longer have the space required to complete deletions.
Please fill out our form at http://www.sas.upenn.edu/computing/forms/student_email_help.html
We will give you a temporary quota increase that will allow you to complete the necessary actions.
- How Can I prevent Quota Problems?
There are a couple of ways you can prevent quota problems in the future.
- You can sign up for a Penn Live account and get a quota of 5GB. That's about 125
times bigger than the 40MB quota in your mail.sas account.
- You can configure your SAS address to forward to any other email account you
prefer (such as a GMail account). We've recently updated email forwarding so that it
can completely by-pass your mail.sas account and prevent quota problems. So, even if
you previously forwarded your SAS email to another account, you should update your
forwarding to take advantage of this new feature.
Details for both of these options are explained here.
- How can I check my quota?
- Log in to your account configuration page here: https://www.sas.upenn.edu/accounts/
- Click on "account maintenance"
- Check the quota summary at the top of the page
