Making the Transition from Mail.SAS to Penn Live

Can I keep my existing mail.sas account and have a Penn Live account?
Yes. If you had a mail.sas account prior to May 1 2007, it will remain active until you graduate, even if you register for Penn Live. However, be aware that once you register for Penn Live, all mail sent to your SAS address will be directed only to your Penn Live account; new mail will not go to both Penn Live and your old mail.sas account.

Old messages held in your mail.sas account (those from before you registered for Penn Live) will remain available on the mail.sas server until you graduate, and you can access them as before from http://webmail.sas.upenn.edu or from your favorite email program. Any web pages or other files stored in your mail.sas account will also remain available until you graduate. If you wish, you can migrate your old messages to Penn Live.

Can I move mail from my existing SAS email account to Penn Live?
Yes, but it's not required. You can continue to access old messages in your mail.sas account. However, you may find it convenient to move all your old messages into your Penn Live account. You can use the Windows Live Mail Desktop program to transfer your mail; this program runs only on Windows computers. Instructions for how to migrate mail with this pr ogram are provided here.

If you have a Mac and want to move your existing messages to your Penn Live account, you can use Entourage; instructions can be found here.

Contact an ITA if you live in one of the College Houses and need help with this process.

If you do not have access to an ITA, contact the SAS Student Help Desk to get assistance with migrating mail.

How do I import my contacts from webmail.sas into Penn Live?
If you have only a few contacts listed in your old webmail.sas address book, it's probably easiest for you to manually enter those contacts in Penn Live. However if you want to move lots of contacts from webmail.sas into Penn Live you can find instructions on how to do a bulk import here.

Technical Support & Configuring mail Clients

What do I do if I encounter an account creation error?
Please try the account creation process again. Errors tend to be fixed when making a second attempt. However, if the error recurs or you want to report addition information related to this problem, please use our SAS Computing Help Form and include any error message you get. We'll try to resolve the problem as quickly as possible.

Why does Penn Live ask me to type eight-character sequences of text sometimes?
As a method of limiting spam, Penn Live will ask you to retype a short series of characters the first time you send a message or edit your mail settings. More information can be found here: HIP Challenge.

How can I use mail clients, such as Thunderbird and Outlook, with Penn Live?
You can find configuration instructions for the more popular clients here:

Windows Mac OS
Thunderbird Thunderbird
Outlook Express Apple Mail 2.1
Outlook -
Windows Live Mail -

If you are already familiar with how to configure a mail client, or are using a client that is not listed here, the general settings are:

Incoming Mail Server:
server name: pop3.live.com
protocol: POP3, using SSL
port: 995

Outgoing Mail Server:
server name: smtp.live.com
protocol: SMTP, using SSL
port: 25
Username: enter your full email address (e.g. bfranklin@sas.upenn.edu)

Can I check my mail using my mobile phone?
Yes, information regarding Penn Live for mobile devices can be found here

My Outlook Connector doesn't seem to be working. What do I do?
Go into your webview and make sure that the name you entered in your Account Summary matches the one you entered in your Outlook Connector. You can access your webview account summary by going to "options", and then "more options" and then "View and edit your personal information".

If this doesn't solve your problem, in Outlook Connector, in the lower right hand corner, there is a drop down menu labeled "Server Status." Under "Server Status" is the option "Detailed Report." After clicking the detailed report, a window should open with details relating to any error messages that may be going on behind the scenes. If you could copy and paste that text into our SAS Computing Help Form, it would help us diagnose the problem.

Can I configure Windows Live Mail to look up addresses in the Penn Directory?
Yes, you can find the steps to do so here.

My Mail client isn't downloading mail that I have sorted into folders. What do I do?
POP cannot connect to server mail folders; it can only download messages from your inbox.

How can I get additional help or make a suggestion about how Penn Live can be improved?
