SAS Student Email

As an SAS student, you are provided with an SAS email address based on your PennKey. For example, if your PennKey is bfranklin, your email address will be bfranklin@sas.upenn.edu This is the address that is entered for you in the Penn directory and is the address that your professors, advisors and others at Penn will use to communicate with you.

You can choose how to configure delivery of mail sent to your SAS email address.

You can...

  1. Sign up for Penn Live and have your mail delivered to that account
  2. Penn Live is a special version of Microsoft Windows Live (Hotmail), customized specially for Penn students. We have compiled a list of questions and answers about Penn Live to help you understand this service and help you get started. You can access that FAQ here. We encourage you to read through our FAQ before you set up your account. If you have questions not addressed in the FAQ, please see our Penn Live support page.

Penn Live offers significant advantages for SAS students.
    • You'll have 5GB of storage space available; that's approximately 50 times more than is available from a typical student account on mail.sas
    • Penn Live is hosted on servers managed by Microsoft to provide the highest levels of reliability and performance
    • Mail from University contacts will not be marked as SPAM
    • The Penn Live communication suite includes more than just email. It also has tools for calendar and contact management. Many other useful features are in development and will be introduced as they become available.

  3. Forward to a Gmail account.

While there is no formal relationship between SAS and Google, we find that GMail is a reliable and effective service for managing your SAS email.

We find GMail to be a good option for managing your SAS email because:
    • It allows you to set your from address to be your SAS email address, making mail you send look like it is coming from your SAS address, rather than your GMail address
    • Its SPAM filters are not overly-aggressive, and so mail sent from University contacts is generally not mistaken for SPAM
    • It offers IMAP access to your email

Please see our instructions on how to optimize your email to work with your SAS email address.

  5. Forward to an account you have with another email provider (AOL, Yahoo, etc.).

If you are happy with your current mail service, you can associate your SAS email address with that account.

Hotmail users - If you curently use Hotmail, we encourage you to sign up for Penn Live. Penn Live doesn't have any advertising, and includes some features not available in the standard, free version of Hotmail. For example, Penn Live allows you to access your mail from a desktop mail program (e.g. Outlook or Apple Mail).

Yahoo, & Hotmail users - Please see our instructions on how to optimize your email to work with your SAS email address.
