Instructional Technology: Services and Support
What kinds of technology services and support
are normally available for instruction in SAS?
Services related to support for SAS courses are offered at no
charge to the academic department. These include:
Course activities that involve support for students should be coordinated in advance by the instructor. Examples include:
- assignments that require software or
functionality not ordinarily
available in our computer labs
- presentations or other activities where
students will need
AV equipment or support outside of class time
- digital media projects where students
need to borrow camera
equipment, use video editing systems or other equipment normally
reserved for instructors
- course web sites (outside of Blackboard)
where students post
content
- evening video screenings where no
instructor is present
- Videoconference
sessions for classes
Most of the services cited above can be arranged by contacting
Erin Fallon at Multi-Media
Services, or Ed
Dixon at the Language Resource Center
(LRC).
Technology support for non-class events (conferences, symposia)
may involve charges to the department, especially when it involves
staff overtime or rented equipment. Contact Multi-Media Services
at reserve@ccat.sas.upenn.edu
for details.
What kinds of activities require grants or other financial support?
We always do our best to extend as much support as possible for
instructional projects. However, some projects require resources
beyond what we can provide in the course of normal operations.
Projects that involve any of the following typically require a
special internal grant, or charges to the department.
-
Highly labor-intensive activities, such as digitizing
large quantities of material
- Custom programming or other specialized
technical skills
- Specialized or expensive equipment and
software
SAS provides internal grants to help support instructional technology
projects. See details about what
support is available and how to apply. Language teachers are also encouraged
to apply to the Consortium for Language
Teaching and Learning for funding. Faculty can use these grants to purchase
software or equipment, hire students, part-time workers, or occasionally even
full-time staff to develop their projects. SASC staff will assist by providing
technology consulting, training and access to SAS Computing facilities. Projects
that require an extensive time commitment from SASC staff may have to provide
salary support for the relevant staff positions.
