Photo Booth

Photobooth is an application that comes bundled on your Mac that can record videos using the built in webcam. You can use this application to capture video, but it does not allow for much in the way of editing. Depending on the version you can view the video file in the finder (file system) after you complete a recording by right (command) clicking or using the command + R key combination after you click on a recording. The below tutorial details this process and is done using Photo Booth version 4.0 (271):

iMovie

iMovie is an application that comes bundled on your Mac that can edit multiple video clips together. To learn more about iMovie and editing visit the The David B. Weigle Information Commons. The below tutorial details exporting a video from iMovie to your desktop and is done using iMovie 09' version 8.0.6 (821):

Formatting a video created on a Windows computer, or through any other video production tools.

Use whatever software shipped with your PC and record a video with the webcam. Then use the free application Miro Video Convertor  and save the video using the  iPhone preset.

Converting  .AVI or a .WMV files for the media server

Miro Video Convertor is a free application that can convert video files to a format that playback correctly on the SAS media server.

Are you done yet?

Your finished movie files should be about 6.5MB per minute.  If you find that your finished work is much bigger than that, please check to see that you used the correct setting when saving your movie, or consult with the staff at the Information Commons lab.

Your video should be in one of these formats

  • Quicktime/h.264(.mov)
  • MPEG 4/h.264 (.mp4, .m4a)

2.  Putting your video online

Uploading videos to the SAS Media Server

Once you are sure that your video is ready to post on the web, you can upload it to the media.sas video server.
