How to Import Thunderbird Contacts into Penn0365

Export contacts

  1. In Thunderbird, go to Tools and select Address Book
  2. Select the address book you want to export. (The Personal Address Book is the default.)
  3. Click Tools from the menu and select Export.
  4. Save the file to your desktop
    1. Name the file: TBcontacts
    2. Change “Save as Type” to Comma Separated (*.csv)
    3. Click Save

Fix your exported contacts

Before you can bring your Thunderbird contacts into Office 365 you’ll need to replace the header row of your TBcontacts.csv file.

  1. Right-click this link, HeadersForImport.csv, and select “Save target as…” or “Save link as…”. Save the file to your desktop.
  2. Open HeadersForImport.csv from your desktop
    1. Click on the number 1 to the left of the first row to select it
    2. Do a Ctrl-C to copy this row
  3. Open TBcontacts.csv from your desktop. The file should open in Excel.
    1. Click on the number 1 to the left of the first row to select it
    2. Do a Ctrl-V to paste the copied row over the top
  4. Delete any rows for contacts you no longer need.
  5. Fill in any missing information for the First Name, Last Name and E-mail Display Name fields.
  6. Save the file.
  7. Click the Yes button when asked "Do you want to keep the workbook in the format?"
  8. Close the file.
  9. Click the Don't Save button when asked "Do you want to save the changes you made to 'yourfilename.csv'?"

Import the exported address book into Office 365

  1. Log into your Office 365 account
  2. Click on the gear to the right of your name and choose "Options"
  3. If not already there, select "account"
  4. Under "shortcuts to other things you can do" on the right side of the screen, click on the bottom link that says "Import your contacts from an existing email account"
  5. The "import contacts" window should open
  6. Click “Choose File”: Navigate to the CSV file you saved to your desktop
  7. Click the next button to import your contacts
  8. You should see a message that says that your contacts were successfully imported and the number of contacts imported.
  9. Click the finish button
  10. To see your imported contacts select People from the top menu, and select My Contacts in the left pane

Note: Only individual contacts can be imported into Office 365. Groups of contacts must be manually re-created in Office 365.
