What constitutes Chinese popular culture in the modern age? How does popular culture contest and collaborate with classical Chinese literature in the formation of Chinese modernity? How do contemporary artists, writers, singers, and filmmakers portray and recreate the image of China? And how does popular culture intersect with and transform religious practices in Taiwan? This course introduces and highlights the variability of modern Chinese culture in PRC, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, and other transnational Chinese communities over the past century. We will engage with a variety of narrative traditions such as philosophical writing, fiction, and folktale. We will also investigate different visual, audio, and performative representations of Chinese culture.
