I) Introduction to the Earthquake Assignment. Please read these instructions thouroughly before continuing.

This assignment has two main parts, each are found at the California State University's Virtual Courseware Site. The main purpose of these exercises is to give you a firm grasp on the concepts used to locate the epicenter of an earthquake (relationship between s & p waves, triangulation, etc.) and to help you understand the methods for determining the richter magnitude of those quakes.

When you go to the Virtual Earthquake Site, you may want to familiarize yourself with some of the concepts before you begin the actual assignment. To do this, go to the Virtual Earthquake site using the link below and then click on the word "Tutorials" on the right hand side of the screen, 4th button down. The tutorials are short and very informative.

When you are ready to begin this assignment, click on the link below, which will take you to the Virtual Earthquake site. Once there click on "Travel Time" to begin the assignment. The assignment requires that you fill in a journal at the bottom of the screen. When you reach the last page of the assignment, BE SURE to PRINT the Journal, before returning to the main page.

When you have completed the Travel Time assignment you will be returned to the main page. Proceed to the next assignment by clicking on the "Epicenter & Magnitude" button. [Please Note: the Travel Time exercise is designed to prepare you for the Epicenter & Magnitude Asignment. Please be sure to do them in order.] Follow the instructions there. When you complete the assignment, you will be asked for your name, institution, class code. Fill this section out completely using : 181672 as your Class Code. A Virtual Seismologist Certificate will be produced (suitable for framing). Print this out, even if your name does not appear on the certificate and then close the page. You will be returned to the Epicenter and Magnitude page. Print out the journal for this assignment. You are now done.

Now BEGIN the assignment.

If you have not had enough of earthquake epicenter location and magnitude determination, you can also check out this site. This is for fun not extra credit!
