Project 1 (8 teams). Comparison of historical temperature records in Philadelphia with comparable data from four suburban communities.
This Project is an extension of Homework # 2. Homework # 2 explored the relationship between four suburban communities and Philadelphia from 1950-1957. Project 1 will extend the comparison to include data from 1960-1979. Two teams will be assigned to each of the four suburbs for detailed examination.
Each team will produce a graph of Maximum & Minimum temperature for each year between 1960 and 1979 and compare to the Philadelphia data.
Questions that they will try to answer include:
1) Does the suburb under study consistently show warmer, cooler, or the same temperatures as Philadelphia?
2) Has the temperature relationship changed over time? (i.e. have the suburbs become warmer, cooler, or have not changed over time with respect to Philadelphia?
Project 1A. Historical Tempeature Comparison Between Philadelphia and Willow Grove, PA.
*Project 1B. Historical Tempeature Comparison Between Philadelphia and Moorestown, NJ.
*Project 1C. Historical Tempeature Comparison Between Philadelphia and Marcus Hook, PA.
*Project 1D. Historical Tempeature Comparison Between Philadelphia and Coatesville, PA.
Project 2 (8 teams). Comparison of historical precipitation records in Philadelphia with comparable data from four suburban communities.
This Project explores the relationship of precipitation between four suburban communities and Philadelphia from 1960-1979. Two teams for each of the four suburbs will be given a single suburb to examine in detail.
Each team will produce a graph of daily rainfall for each year between 1960 and 1979 and compare to the Philadelphia data.
Questions that they will try to answer include:
1) Does the suburb under study consistently show higher, lower, or the same amount of Precipitation as Philadelphia?
2) Has this relationship changed over time? (i.e. have specific suburbs been effected by an urban heat island effect or rainshadow effect caused by Philadelphia?)
**Project 2A. Historical Precipitation Comparison Between Philadelphia and Willow Grove, PA.
Project 2B. Historical Precipitation Comparison Between Philadelphia and Moorestown, NJ.
**Project 2C. Historical Precipitation Comparison Between Philadelphia and Marcus Hook, PA.
Project 2D. Historical Precipitation Comparison Between Philadelphia and Coatesville, PA.
Project 3 (8 teams). Historical and modern land use patterns in four Philadelphia suburban communities.
This Project will examine historical land use patterns in four suburbs of Philadelphia for the same time period as the orginal study and for a more recent date (2000). Two teams will examine each of the four suburbs in detail.
Questions that they will try to answer include:
1) Has the suburb under study changed in terms of its land use between the two dates examined?
2) How has land use changed and how has this effected temperature?
Project 3A. Historical and modern Land Use in Willow Grove, PA.
**Project 3B. Historical and modern Land Use in Moorestown, NJ.
**Project 3C. Historical and modern Land Use in Marcus Hook, PA.
**Project 3D. Historical and modern Land Use in Coatesville, PA.
Project 4 (2 teams). Modern Land use patterns in Philadelphia.
This Project will examine historical land use patterns in Philadelphia. Project 4 will examine land use patterns for Philadelphia today and between 1960 and 1979. Each team will examine half of the city in detail.
Questions that they will try to answer include:
1) Has Philadelphia changed in terms of its land use between the two dates examined?
2) How has land use changed and how has this effected temperature?
